Q&A: “The most important thing is that it sparkles…”

By Mike Fried,

I stumbled across your site and I’m hoping you can help me. I will be spending a lot of money on the ring purchase and am a bit overwhelmed on trying to figure out what is a good deal. I am looking for approx. 2.2-2.5 carat diamond with a round shape. The most important thing is that it sparkles, second most important is that it looks big. I was hoping to spend in the $25k range or less. I plan on getting a setting similar to this:
Blue Nile Classic Six-Prong Solitaire Engagement Ring

Please let me know if you can help in my search.

Thanks!

Two points that I’d like to make before I make some recommendations:

1) For a diamond that size, you will need to get a nice SI1/VS2. I don’t think a 2.20ct is in the cards, and you may be better off getting a nice 2.0ct. If you read our post on diamond size you will see that there is very little noticeable difference between a 2.0ct and a 2.20ct. The difference in diameter is only 2-3%. If you really want 2.20+, you should probably budget around 28K for the ring/diamond.

2) We would not recommend Blue Nile for a diamond like that. I suggest reading our Blue Nile Review; if you stick with them the only way to get an eye-clean diamond of that size is to get a VVS2.

I’d be happy to make some recommendations for you I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

Thank you for getting back to me and your advice.

I guess the most important thing is that the diamond sparkles. So if I need to reduce size in order to get that in my price range then that is ok. My max budget including ring/diamond/taxes everything is about 28k-29k. Obviously if I can get a great diamond for less I would like to do so.

I did see your review on blue nile. I wasn’t actually looking to buy a diamond from there.. just wanted to show you and example of the kind of ring that I would like to get to place the diamond in. I don’t know if that affects what diamond you would pick but figured it wouldn’t hurt to provide you with that info.

Hopefully that puts us on the same page and I would love to see some recommendations from you.

Thank you for your help,

Ok, we are on the same page. This is what I’d recommend for you:

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1483045.asp

These are both beautiful diamonds and good value.

Those diamonds look great and in my price range.

So I found the truthaboutdiamonds website very informative but how does this work for you.. do I pay you a commission in addition to the price of the diamond? Just not sure how it works.

Thanks for your help. I do appreciate getting an insider opinion on this large purchase.

Let me know what you decide to go with in the end. If you’d like to see how the commission works. Read here.
