Q&A: Looking for a 1.4-1.8 Ct. Fancy Yellow Diamond With Up to $15,000

By Mike Fried,

Hi,

I’ve been researching engagement diamonds for months now and have learned a ton from your site so thank you for that.

I’m in the market for a fancy intense yellow diamond. SI1 – VS1. I’d like 1.4-1.8 carats. I’m looking for something that has a nice yellow color/shade within those parameters.

I live in New York City so I’ll probably purchase locally. However, I travel for work to Brussels almost monthly so I’ve kicked the idea around of buying the ring out there should I save any money.

I’ve been comparing what I like online and where I’m getting tripped up on is the color. For example, the first link I would consider to be a beautiful diamond. This is the type of color I believe I’m looking for. The 2nd diamond, I don’t like the color as much. While it’s bigger, it come’s in at less money. Is this simply because of the fluorescence as well as my color opinion or is there more to the story?

Anyways, I would love to hear your expertise about finding the perfect stone in either New York or abroad as well as some opinions about the 2 links I’ve attached.

Thank you so much for all of your content.

Brussels wouldn’t save you anything. The same applies for buying in a physical store. That’s why we recommend buying online: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/buy-diamonds-online/.

I like the color of both diamonds. They are very rich. But what you like matters the most. The medium fluorescence shouldn’t have that big of an effect on the color. There is a wide range of tones within each color intensity. That’s why the diamonds can look differently even though they both are “Intense Yellow.”

How much was the JA diamond?

Thank you for getting back too me.

The JA diamond was 14K the other was 15K. Would I save any money in Antwerp?

Do you have any other recommendations of places you know who I could work with?

Thanks!

Antwerp isn’t a good place for diamonds: https://www.diamonds.pro/reviews/antwerp-diamond-quarter/.

You covered the best companies for fancy diamonds. I’d recommend working with Leibish directly as they can source more options than those they have online.

I also found this one:

It’s not a fancy intense, it’s one grade below that, but I’m interested to know what you think about the color.

The one you sent is looks really nice, I like that color. Good price range.

Does the naked eye see much of a difference between fancy and fancy intense?

It all depends on the “shade” that you like. But even a “fancy” diamond can look amazingly rich. And if you like the color, there is no reason to hunt for fancy intense.
