Q&A: Seeking Best Round 3/4 Carat Diamond for My Money

By Mike Fried,

I’m looking to buy an engagement ring for my future wife and needless to say diamonds are expensive. My goals are the following:

I’m looking for the best diamond for the price, but at the same time she looked at an I color, SI1 clarity 3/4 carat diamond and loved it.

Shape: Round
Desired Color Range: G-I
Desired Clarity: VS1-SI1
Budget – $2500 for the ring total, diamond only; have not clue

Thanks for the time.

Happy to help. What kind of setting are you looking to get? I need to get a general idea so I know how much room I have left for the diamond. A basic solitaire? Something with side stones?

First, thank you for your help. I’m looking for a single solitaire in a trellis or cathedral setting. Here is exactly what she liked, but needless to say the asking price is insane.

Worst case I would be interested in the diamond itself. As a buyer, how am I protected in my purchase? Are the diamonds obtained in a clean, humane manor?

Here’s your best options:

match that with:

That’s a GIA triple excellent ideal cut just like the Helz masterpiece.

Let me know what you think!

I like this a lot. I’m debating between 2 different settings. I might go with a smaller stone, but nothing too much smaller. Should I choose a stone that has a slight fluorescence? To give you an idea, she tried on a Ideal cut, 73 point, I colored round and LOVED it. Any recommendations on if I should go a point or 2 smaller and get a better color or clarity then I am open.

Sorry for the delay. I never recommend people actively seek out stones with fluorescence. People make a much bigger deal out of it than it deserves. The effect is extremely subtle and in most cases not really noticeable. once you find a nice stone, grab it. I’ve seen so many people lose out on the stone they like because they hesitate worrying about things that don’t matter – and flr. is high up on the list of things people worry about needlessly.

No problem. I definitely want to get that setting and have it inscribed. I might have a loose stone here that I can have mounted. What do I need to do from here?

Just order the ring, I guess!

The loose stone just came about. If you get credit for me mentioning you, or something else, let me know as I wish for you to get something for pointing me in this great direction.

If you order online, it should happen automatically. Thanks!

Here is what I think I have narrowed it down to.

Ring setting: 11116W
Stone: either item number 1360776, 1361832 or 1362612

What are your thoughts? I spoke with the jeweler that she spent so much time in and he remembered something about 73 points being a good size but she said nothing bigger as she wants to keep it proportionate to the band size. I’m leaning more towards item number 1361832. It looks eye clean and is a good size. I thought of getting an I colored, VS2 77 point stone from a local pawn shop for ~1400 but it’s not certified, just appraised. Is a certification necessary?

I can pretty much guarantee you that if it’s not certified, it’s not really an I VS2, and you’ll also have no idea what the proportions are like on the stone. SO I would stay away.

I agree re: this stone:

I think it’s the best of the bunch. It will look great in that setting.

Let’s spend some MONEY! This is what I want. How do I order it now?

Just go on the site, and add them into your shopping cart and pull the trigger!

Will you get credit for it?

The credit should happen automatically even without the coupon. Just buy from the same computer from which you’ve been clicking on my links.

Thanks!!

I apologize that I didn’t reply back sooner. I figured it out last night and ordered the ring.

Great! Thanks! Please stay in touch and let me know what you think when it arrives!

Will do! I’m impressed enough with everything that I went ahead and ordered another wooden box so I can place her wedding band in it. It just seems wrong to place such an expensive ring into a 10 cent box, but just my thoughts.
