Q&A: Searching for 2.05+ Ct. Round Diamond for a Halo Micropave Setting for a $16k – $17k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Your website is fantastic and the advice you give is very much appreciated. I am looking for at least a 2.05 carat weight stone and, after reading your website literature, am considering lowering my clarity minimum to SI1 in order to get something more in the budget range (around $16,000). That said, I’d like to get your opinion on whether I am getting a good deal on the following Round Brilliant diamond:

Carat weight: 2.17
Color: J
Clarity: VS1
Cut: Excellent
TBL: 58%
TD: 60.9%
Girdle: THN to STK, F (4.0%)
Culet: NON
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluor: Strong Blue
Cert: GIA (GIA Report No. 2151846047)

Price: $21,000 but discounted to $17,300

Color of metal for setting: 14k white gold or platinum
Setting style: Halo and micropave down the sides (similar to: http://www.harrywinston.com/store/engagement/diamond-rings-2/products/cushion-cut-micropave)
You think it’s a good deal? Thank you so much.

I think that diamond is overpriced (the following suggestion is a comparable alternative as the previous one was recommended form a company that no longer exists):

I also think you will need to spend more and go up to I color: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/

Thank you so much for the response.

About the I color recommendation, is it because of the setting style (i.e., halo with micropave down the sides)?

Also, assuming I found a 2.17 diamond identical to the one I asked you about but with an I color, what do you think would be a fair price or price range?

It would be a significant cost upgrade. Whats your budget?

My budget ceiling is $17,000. I was just asking about the 2.17 I color as a hypothetical.

Recognizing the reality of the situation, the bottom line is that it has to be a minimum 2.01 carat round, excellent cut, with a setting style consisting of a halo and micropave down the sides. Any recommendations?
