Hello,
We purchased a 3.3 Carat round diamond. VS1, J, Excellent cut for $38,000. Is this a good deal? The jeweler said that this diamond was “on sale.”
I just don’t want to be ripped off.
Thanks.
Was that diamond GIA/AGS certified? If so, can you send me its report number so I can take a look at the specs?
Also, do you have a chance to take it back and get a full refund in case it wasn’t a good purchase? I just don’t want to go into this knowing that there is nothing you can do about it now.
The GIA report number is GIA 6205747898.
I do have a chance to have a 100% refund.
If this wasn’t a good deal can you please explain specifically why.
Thanks.
The diamond isn’t so bad. The angles are a bit off and the table is slightly larger that I would like which both can have an effect on brilliance. The larger the table, the less light refracts through it (sparkles). “Perfect” light refraction usually occurs with tables around 55-57%. The larger a table is, the larger the diamond looks (that is the biggest facet on the top, so it makes the face appear larger). I like the 58-59% as it’s a good balance between appearance of size and brilliance.
However, if you have it at home and you like the way it looks, it’s no big deal.
I just had a quick look around and found a much better cut for the same money:

Thank you so much for the information. I feel like I want to go for a smaller, better quality diamond. Maybe a better color as well. What is your thought on color? Should I stay in a certain range?
Thanks.
……
I have attached a GIA report for a diamond that we are interested in buying. The jeweler wants $36,093 for it.
I really appreciate all of your help. We just don’t want to get screwed or accept a bad diamond.
Thank you again.
The diamond looks nice. But then again, there is no reason to overpay for it. Dropping down the clarity at least a bit (yet still getting an eye-clean diamond) saves you a lot:

Thank you. I really appreciate all of your help.
My pleasure.
Let me know if I can be of more help.
