Q&A: Looking for a Round or Oval Diamond for a Platinum Halo Setting With a $10k Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi guys, I’m planning on proposing to my girlfriend this year and I’m really excited to work with you guys to in the process of finding an engagement ring! Thanks.

If I recommend a diamond to you now, it will be gone in a few days. But once you’re ready to purchase, I’ll be happy to help you with the search. I’ll need to know what style of setting (solitaire, halo, pave or other), metal (platinum/white or yellow gold) and shape of diamond you’re looking for and what your approximate budget is.

Thank you for your quick response! I’m looking for a platinum ring with a halo setting (although I don’t know much about settings). Either circular or oval for the shape – is one preferable to the other? What’s the scoop on circular vs oval?

I would like to keep the price of the entire ring under 10K – is this reasonable for a one carat stone? It has been awhile since I researched the 4 C’s, but it was my understanding that cut was more important than color and clarity. But I would definitely like to hear your thoughts as well as know any questions I should be asking.

Thank you for the information.

I think that choosing a shape is up to your personal taste mainly. Both, round and oval shape, will look very nice and elegant in a halo setting.

This price is reasonable for more than a carat stone. Have a look at this diamond:

Here is an oval shape:

They are very well cut and going to look colorless in a halo setting with pave. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/

What do you think?

Even at that price for the stone, the entire ring and setting would be within my budget?

How much does the setting and a halo with pave and all that cost in addition to the stone?

Once the stone is purchased, how long does the making the ring take?

Ok so for a round stone, H or I color is good – what are your thoughts on J?

Thanks.

Yes, the stones leave some space in your budget for a halo setting with pave.

I suggest asking JA and Blue Nile directly. They will be able to tell you more about their settings and delivery time.

As for the color, we recommend H+ color for a halo setting. An I or J color stone will look warm in comparison with the small stones. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend lower color than H.
