Q&A: Looking for Round Diamond for WG/Pt Solitaire Setting

By Mike Fried,

I decided to take ask my girlfriend of 4 years to marry me on our next vacation during christmas. We’ll be traveling to Argentina, and I thought it would be a romantic place to pop the question.

I’m not into jewelry and have never really worn any, so i’d like to thank you for your site. It definitely equipped me with a lot of valuable information.

Now i’m at a crossroads to pick the final product and would love your help if you have time.

I’ve gone through JA, and I love their diamonds, but I couldn’t careless for their settings. Have you heard of anyone getting a diamond from JA and a setting from BN? Also found out about these two from your site.

I set aside 10k for this, i’m looking for a 1 carat, VG cut, G-F color, and VVS2/VVS1.

I’d love your opinion on these diamonds:

I like the JA ones more just because I can actually see the diamond. Any advice you might be able to impart would be greatly appreciated.

I’d be happy to make some recommendations and guide you through the process. What type of setting are you considering? Yellow gold or white gold/platinum? Will it be a solitaire or does it have sidestones/pave? This may affect the colors that I recommend for the center diamond (as we explain in our post on color).

Let me know and I’d be happy to send you some suggestions.

Thank you for the reply.

As far as the engagement choices, she tends to favor white gold/platinum. I was thinking more of a solitaire. I tend to like more of the cathedral settings, so it might be slightly elevated.

Thanks again for all your help.

I think you need to adjust your parameters a bit. You can easily get a nice G VS2, but you should improve the cut on the diamond. I would recommend this one for you:

I like this diamond more than all three of the ones you selected. Its bright, eye-clean and a fantastic cut. And, to top it off, its cheaper.

What do you think?

That looks fine, I went over the diamond with the magnifying glass option and looks pretty solid.

Do you think with this diamond, I can order a setting from BlueNile or go to Macy’s and pick out a setting.

I might want to actually to go to a brick and mortar just to see the diamond with a setting to pick out something, feel it might be more useful then picking something on line and hoping it matches well.

I think you can easily go into Macy’s and pick out a setting. They should have no problem setting the diamond for you.

Awesome, thank you very much Mike, greatly appreciate the help.

Best of luck.

Before I make the final purchase, I wanted to check one more thing.

I don’t mind if I pay a little extra to have a ring with a better color, do you think cut outweighs this?

If I went with one grade better on color would it be worth the extra money or not?

Since I already have a budget for the ring I don’t really mind too much if it’s a little higher.

…….

What about something like this: https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Very-Good-Cut-Round-Diamond-1514571.asp

This is a nice diamond as well.

There is no point in going above G color.

Sounds good thanks again Mike, sorry for all the emails.

No worries. Let me know how it looks when it arrives.

Will do, ordering it now.

…….

The ring came yesterday. The diamond looks great, I took it to get a setting today, the jeweler looked it up out of curiosity and said I got a great deal on it. I actually said the price a couple times.

Thanks so much for your time Mike. Greatly appreciate your time and advice.
