Q&A: Looking for Round Cut for $9-9.5K Budget

By Mike Fried,

Greetings! first, thank you so much for this valuable website. it’s been tremendously helpful in the search. my kind (and hot) husband is upgrading my e ring after 11 years of marriage, however, this time around, the burden is entirely on me to find a stone that i’ll be happy with (for the rest of my life). initially, i looked at princess and radiant cuts, but i was quite surprised at how much bigger a round cut looked in the same wt as the other two cuts. so, i’m looking for the largest round on a budget of 9-9.5k for the stone. ive been looking at H/I SI1-2 stones in ideal cut. im having a hard time figuring which ones would be eye clean. i’d really appreciate your opinion on these.

I’d be happy to make some recommendations and guide you through the process. What type of setting are you considering? Yellow gold or white gold/platinum? Will it be a solitaire or does it have sidestones/pave? This may affect the colors that I recommend for the center diamond (as we explain in our post on color).

Let me know and I’d be happy to send you some suggestions.

Thanks for responding, however, I already made a purchase from James Allen.  The stone will go on a pave band with white gold. I ended up purchasing a stone that i did not post on the original email. Here it is linked.

Anyway, thinking about it, I would still like your insight and if you think I’ve made a horrible decision, please let me know and I can continue the search (with your help).

I’m sorry to say it, but I think you should go with this one:

I don’t think that other one is eye-clean and the table is pretty big. If its already on the way, you can see how it is and exchange it if you don’t like it (they have free returns).

I received the stone and at first i really liked it, but after photographing it with flash and looking at it under bright spot light, it doesn’t glow and it seems darker than my previous 0.5 carat stone(because it’s shallow as you said?). under normal lighting, it looks really nice though. i havent completely made up my mind, so could you pick out a few more for me? the one you sent was already unavailable when i clicked on the link.

I would ask JA to have their gemologist inspect these two diamonds:

They can see if they are eye-clean or not.
