Q&A: Looking for a Pear-Shaped Diamond Around 1 Ct. with $5k Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

Firstly, I wanted to thank you for the detailed reviews you have regarding online diamond retailers. I also appreciate all the knowledge you provide for different types of diamonds. I have been looking for a Pear shaped diamond for several months on both BN and JA and I was convinced that I would purchase the engagement ring from blue nile until I read your review about them.

I wanted a solitaire Pear shaped diamond engagement ring with the diamond being about 0.95 to 1 carat for around $4500 ($5000 total with the ring). I have been searching on JA using your parameter recommendations but have not been successful in finding any diamond I like. Either there are visible inclusions or there is the “bow tie” effect or the diamond just does not have a good L/W ratio.

It would be greatly appreciated if you can recommend some diamonds for me to choose from.

Carat – 0.95 – 1.2

Color D-G …I know you had recommended H as well but since you also stated that color is one of the more important aspect of a pear shaped diamond I wanted to keep it between D-G

Clarity – IF to Sl1

Fluorescence: None to Faint.

Any help would be greatly appreciated….Thank you very much in advance!

This diamond is your best bet:

It would be nice if it were a tad longer, but this has a minimal bowtie (every pear shape has one), is eye-clean and very bright.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I just had one concern with the diamond you had suggested. In the image it seems to have an scratch along the length on the top side. How apparent would that scratch be when viewed with a naked eye?

Also, What is your opinion on this diamond:

It also has a little scratch near the center. Would you recommend the first diamond over this one?

Thank you again.

I believe that feather is eye-clean, but that diamond you found is a better choice. I don’t know why I missed that before.

Thank you for your previous help…Since we last spoke the two diamonds which we had selected were sold the same day you had sent me the reply. But then a day later, one of them was up for sale again. I have now selected 3 diamonds and I am awaiting for their gymnologist to review them for me. I was wondering if I can get your professional opinion on these three diamonds as well.

Here they are:

Once again, thank you very much for your help.

I’d stick with the original recommendation. Its the nicest shape of the three (the other two are a bit chubby).
