Q&A: Looking for an Oval-Shaped Diamond for a Platinum Setting Within a $4k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

I’m based in London and am currently researching my options with regard to buying a diamond. What has struck me so far is the wide variability in pricing. Thanks to your website I am now considering buying from James Allen and shipping to the UK.

I have a budget of roughly $4000 for the diamond and know I want an oval diamond in the region of 0.9ct to 0.95ct. I would appreciate your thoughts on the best combination of clarity and colour I should be considering. The diamond would be set in a platinum ring. Of course I welcome any suggestions you can make also.

Thank you for your time.

Thanks a million for getting back to me. It really is great to have a service like yours available when trying to buy a diamond online. Much appreciated.

Regards the ones you sent through they look great. I am drawn to the last two particularly.

One question… Can I ask you to have a look at those with a slightly higher colour grade, say a couple with an F? I do understand from reading your site and others that this is probably beyond what is required and won’t be noticeable when set.

I am asking as this is what my ring designer has suggested and I want to have a couple in this grade to compare with her to the ones you have sent so far. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks again. Have you seen anything you like these but in the slightly larger 0.9ct to 0.95ct. range (similar E/F colour)? I see most of the suggestions are in the range of $3,500 but my budget for the diamond can be up to $4,000 to $4,500.

Hi, I was emailing you a few months ago re. an oval diamond I was looking for but then the trail cooled as the designer I am using had sourced a stone we were maybe going to use. The plan has now changed so I am back to buying off James Allen. Basically when we looked at the stone the bow-tie was quite strong. On paper with dimensions and cert, etc the stone seemed perfect but I just wasn’t comfortable that the bow-tie should be so obvious. I do accept that some bow-tie should appear and indeed it’s absence may be indicative of a bad cut but I feel it shouldn’t be distracting.

Anyway, I have just been looking and came across the stone on link that looks pretty good to me. Appreciate if you can take your time to give your expert opinion and indeed send on any alternatives you might recommend.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for the advice. Some really nice ones suggested.

I found another and I am thinking to go ahead with it. Slightly more expensive but I have a good feeling about it. However, I would really appreciate if you could look first and tell me if it is worth it versus any of the others.

Also, can you let me know again what I need to do in the order to make sure you get credit for helping?

That diamond has great specs, I like it a lot. If you feel that’s the One, go for it, it will make a beautiful ring.

Thanks for thinking about us. It is enough if you use this particular email address to make the purchase. It will help us double check with JA.
