Q&A: Looking for a Halo Platinum Engagement Ring Within a $4k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello! I am looking for an engagement ring with a platinum halo setting. The stone should be eye clean and not too small. My budget is approx. $4000. Would you be able to assist? Thank you in advance.

I’d be happy to make some recommendations for you, but I need a little more info.

What shape diamond are you looking for?

I am looking for a round diamond with at least 0.7 ct. The setting can be platinum or white gold (what would you recommend?), preferably split shank halo. I saw one on James Allen which I liked:

I like this setting as well:

Thanks for your help.

Great, thanks for the additional info.

For metal, we always recommend white gold over platinum because of the huge disparity in upfront costs: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/platinum-vs-gold/. Both metals require upkeep every few years. WG needs to be dipped to retain its color and luster while PT needs to be cleaned and polished because it gets scratched and duller over time. So in the end, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run. And I’d recommend 14k white gold. It’s cheaper and more durable than 18k.

Color-wise, H color is our usual recommendation for halo settings. That way you can make sure there won’t be any warmish tones in it.

I looked around and these diamonds would be my recommendation:

They are well cut, eye-clean and either of them will look great in any halo setting you choose. Also, we have some coupon codes for Blue Nile that give you $100 off of your order. Just pop this code in if you end up going the Blue Nile route. [contact us for your own unique coupon code]

What do you think?

Thanks. Great info and good recommendations. Can you please elaborate on why I should not choose color I with a halo setting? I have seen 0.75 and even 0.8 carat brilliants with color I for the same price as these 0.7 carat color H stones. Is there even a noticable difference between 0.7 and 0.75?

You’re welcome.

Based on our expertise, I color is too low for a type of setting where the tiny diamonds are right next to the center stone. These additional diamonds are usually F/G/H color and might make the difference in colors noticeable. That’s why we recommend going with an H to make sure there won’t be any yellowness in it.

The size always depends on how the diamond is cut. Sometimes a well cut 0.70ct one can be even larger than a 0.75ct.

Thanks a lot. Makes sense.

Thank you.

Is there anything else I might help you with?

Not at this time. You have been extremely helpful.

Thank you. It’s been a pleasure helping you.

So I thought about it the past few days and decided to update my budget from $4000 to $4500. Would it make a difference in the diamond you would recommend? The setting costs about $1500, which would leave $3000 for the diamond. Should I go that route or would you still recommend the previous diamonds?

What do you think of this one?

Thanks for the update.

The diamond you sent me in your follow-up email is most likely not eye-clean and it’s also much pricier than the one I selected before (and it’s the same size).

This would be my recommendation for your new budget:

The overall specs are great on it.

Thanks. I will go with your most recent recommendation.

……

I was going to order the diamond you recommended today, but the website says it is no longer available. I guess I waited to long to pull the trigger. Can you please recommend a similar one as I would like to purchase as soon as possible? I found this one, but I am not sure if it is any good:

It’s stunning! You did a great job finding it! Go for it, it’ll look fantastic!

Thanks for all your help. I finally placed the order. Although I had to choose a different diamond, as it was again sold. I chose this one:

Good job, it looks amazing.

I hope you’ll love it when you receive it. If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.

Have a great week!
