Q&A: Looking for Round Solitaire Diamond for $5000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

I am currently looking at this stone

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1306904.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357

I’m not sure if the hearts and arrows cut is worth it when compared to other ideal cut stones.

I am also a little worried about the J color. I want a white gold or platinum setting and am worried that the J color rating will be too noticeable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for writing. What kind of setting are you looking for? Something with side stones, or a plain solitaire?

I’m currently looking at a plain solitaire, maybe this one

https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/18k-White-Gold-Double-Claw-Prong-Diamond-Engagement-Ring.html?a_aid=dmnd1357

I also like this one:

I’ve been getting a listing of stones and here are the ones that I’m looking at currently, not sure about how much a J color will make

though.

1331619 .92 / J / VS1

1315303 .95 / F / SI1

1289506 .97 / G / SI2

1306904 1.01 / J / VS2

I have already talked to JA through their chat feature to make sure that these stones are eye clean.

If you’re putting the stone in a solitaire, then there’s no reason not to go for a J color. It will look white, for sure. The only way you’d notice that it’s a warmer shade of white would be if you compared it to another diamond of a significantly higher color. Are you interested in using your same budget to get a larger stone, like these?

https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1332323.asp?a_aid=dmnd1357 – GIA triple excellent. No pic, but inclusion is twinning wisps which are almost always eye clean

The way I see it, is you can use your full budget to get a 1ct “TrueHearts” stone, or a larger “ideal” stone. You may or may not be able to actually perceive a difference in brilliance between a “regular” GIA triple excellent and the TH stones (probably not, though), but you will DEFINITELY be able to see the difference in diameter between the stones you linked to and the stones I linked to.

Let me know what you think!

I would actually be interested in looking at the larger stones. I’m a bit iffy about going for something as large as the 1.24 Carat one as my girlfriend’s ring size is only about 4.75 and that may be overkill, but something in the 1.0-1.2 range may be fine. I do like the 1.15C one that you linked. If I get a J color diamond, then should I not get this mount?

https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/18k-White-Gold-Double-Claw-Prong,-Surprise-Diamond-Engagement-Ring.html?a_aid=dmnd1357

Or are the accent diamonds on the side too small to get a color difference? I wouldn’t think the color quality on the accents are better then H anyway.

There’s no problem at all matching a J color center with this setting. Those two “surprise” diamonds are not even lined up with the center stone, so you won’t even be viewing them together in the same glance. And anyway, as you hinted too, they’re too smal to make a meaningful comparison anyway. Small stones like that show color differently than large stones.

I may grab the 1.15C stone then. One other question about sizing. She was measured in a store and was a 4.5 size her hands were cold. The ring went on fairly easy but after taking it off and then putting it back on again, the skin on her knuckle bunched up a bit and made it more difficult to take back off the 2nd time. Since her hands were a bit cold, should I the the ring in a 4.75 or maybe even a 5.0 size?

For that, you should definitely consult with JA’s customer service. My professional experience is limited to the loose diamond trade. Sorry!

Oh! Before I forget, remember to use the TAD0611 coupon code. It’ll give you 10% off the setting.

I will definitely do that. Thank you so much for your help. I will let you know how everything goes and hopefully it looks beautiful.

Great! I look forward to hearing from you!

I ordered the ring on the Sunday night I talked to you. It came on that Friday. The ring is absolutely gorgeous and makes anything I have seen in the stores look like something pulled out of a driveway. It is everything I could have hoped for in a ring and during the week that I owned it I often found myself staring at it in different lights. I will attach some pictures of the ring that I took, they were just quick snap shots but I can’t take anymore at the moment due to my fiance now having it.

My fiance currently lives one state over and goes to law school. After having gone to ask her parents’ permission without her knowing, I made plans to drive out the following weekend in secret. The next weekend I headed out for the 4 hour drive to her apartment. About 40 min out she calls me wanting to talk and take a break from the paper she was writing. I talked to her on the way into town and as I got close to her building I made up an excuse to get off the phone. I then went into her building, got the ring out, and opened the box to be ready for when the door opened. I then called her back from the bottom of the steps in order to keep her from hearing me outside her door. I told her that I had just had someone drop something off outside her door and that she needed to go get it before someone wandered away with it. As she opened her door I was down on one knee and asked her if she would marry me. Her reaction was priceless. She immediately went into a full body flush and had to remove the sweatshirt she was wearing because she instantly started radiating heat and shaking. She said yes, but close to 10 minutes later did she couldn’t remember saying yes and had to say it again. It took close to an hour for her to stop shaking, but close to a week before (as she put it) she stopped behaving like a raccoon and staring at it every time it sparkled. The next day she had to close the blinds because the sun light was hitting the stone and throwing rainbows everywhere, which she started playing with instead of writing her paper.

I want to say again how much I appreciate your help. The ring certainly catches the eye of everyone that is around it now.

Thank you again.

What a wonderful email!! Thank you so much for writing and sharing all of this. It’s funny, but I did almost the exact same thing when I proposed to my wife. I also snuck up to her door when she thought I was in a different city. I also called her on the phone – she was busy watching Friends on TV (I could see her through the window).

I’m so happy it all worked out so nicely.

Can I ask you for a favor? Do you think you could take a couple minutes and write me a short review on ivouch? I would be most grateful if you could.

So thanks again for this lovely email! May you and your fiance share a long life together filled with health, happiness, and love!

Best Wishes.

Yep, I sure will

Have a great holiday
