Q&A: Looking for an Oval-Shaped Diamond for a Yellow Gold Solitaire Setting Within a $6k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello, I am here on a recommendation from a friend of mine who found some success with you guys.

I am looking for an oval diamond around 1.5 carats. My budget is around 6k and I plan to have a solitaire gold ring with a simple band. I also have a size 3 finger. Just trying to find a best diamond for my budget as it will be the only focal point of my ring.

Hope you can help! Thank you!

The problem is that it’s not that easy to find a 1.50ct diamond for 6k. The best one I found was this 1.52ct one:

Let me know what you think.

Thank you so much for your time! I’ve been doing some further “online research”. Since I am having a gold setting, what are your thoughts on a J colored diamond? I have read that gold will reflect yellow light in a diamond anyways so that going for a J diamond will help allow for better clarity and carat size at the same price point?

I don’t like putting J color ovals into rings as they seem a bit too yellow to me. But the truth is that some people don’t even see the difference. It’s definitely an option.

Here are two of them that I found:
Blue Nile LD10625218

Check them out and let me know. Maybe go to a local jewelry store and view a J color GIA oval to make sure you’re OK with the color.

Those look great! We will definitely take your advice and check out some J diamonds before we make a final decision.

If we upped our budget to 8k, what difference would that make in the quality of diamond we could get? Just trying to compare options at this point!

You could get a larger diamond:

Let me know what you find out.

We are back and we have decided that we are happy with a J colored diamond. The diamond that you sent before has been sold. I was hoping you could provide some more options for us.

Thank you for dealing with us! Heads up that we bought the smaller diamond!

Excellent! It was my pleasure helping you. I’m glad you picked one out.
