Q&A: Looking for an Oval-Shaped Diamond for a Yellow Gold Micro-Pave Setting With a $3,600 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Thinking about purchasing this stone:

Blue Nile LD10920177

Wondering if there are any red flags.

It is an excellent option. It’s beautifully cut, eye-clean and has a minimal bow-tie. Great find!

That diamond was snatched up. How about this one? This would be going on a yellow gold micro pave setting.

Also, this diamond as well, .09 fewer carats but looks much better.

Blue Nile LD10736836

I’m not a huge fan of the “Good” symmetry grade on the JA option. It tends to make an undesirable fisheye effect. This one looks much better:

The one from BN is ok, but something like this is going to look identical and is significantly cheaper:

Blue Nile LD10034352

That last stone you suggested from BN was purchased. I was about to pull the trigger and then we had some sizing concerns which I had to figure out 🙂

My criteria are as follows so if you see anything that looks better or similar, I’m open to suggestions!

.89 < 1.0 carat range (1 carat is goal but very flexible here).
L/W Ratio around 1.4+ (I want a longer looking stone).
Something that really sparkles (very good cut, excellent symmetry and polish).
H+ color ~ $3600
This stone is going in a solitaire yellow gold petite pave setting.

I found these stones which seemed close to what I was looking for:

Blue Nile LD11252004
(this stone is smaller and appears to have a visible flaw)

Blue Nile LD10276666
(this stone is a little more expensive and appears to have slight fisheye/bow tie)

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/0.91-carat-d-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-5905398?a_aid=dmnd1357 (stone appears to have multiple visible flaws)

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/0.92-carat-h-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-5905337?a_aid=dmnd1357 (lower L/W ratio and a little more expensive than I’d like)

Let me know which you think is the best stone and if there is anything else that fits my criteria!

I’d be deciding between the LD11252004 and sku-5905337. They look amazing.

I appreciate the help!
