Q&A: Looking for an Oval-Shaped Diamond for a Rose Gold Twisted Halo Setting Within a $9k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Need help to verify correct diamond cut, color, clarity, and prices!

We have a lot of articles that specialize in those topics on our site. But I’ll be more than happy to help you with specific questions.

If you tell me what exactly you’re looking for, I’ll see what I can do.

Here is the ring setting that I am looking to purchase… what do you think about it? and the price?

Here is the diamond (oval).
What do you think about this? And the price?

Your website makes many points about the Cut of a diamond being the most important, however, my significant other wants an OVAL diamond and I was informed that the Cut criteria varies with such diamonds. Therefore, your assistance in evaluating this diamond would be greatly appreciated!

Also here is another diamond from another website that has better inclusion criteria but less L:W ratio. I was told that for an oval diamond not to settle for any Length/Width ratio less than 1.4.

Thanks for sending all those links.

I don’t know who told you that you can’t go below 1.4 ratio, but it’s not true. Theoretically, you can get a very rounded oval if you like that. It’s really about your taste the most. As we say in our oval article, “While primarily dependent on personal style and preference, the Oval Cut Diamond is usually most appealing with a ratio between 1.30-1.50. Review various Oval Diamonds to determine which ratio is most appealing to you.

I checked both diamonds and they both are eye-clean (even though I wouldn’t recommend the BN one because it has a cavity there which is the type of inclusions where dirt can get stuck in and then the dark spot is reflecting throughout the diamond). However, they both have strong fluorescence which is undesirable. It usually causes a hazy/milky look in daylight. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/fluorescence/

Also, one more thing, the setting you chose is gorgeous, but the description says that it’s for a round center. That means that you can’t place an oval into it. It’s possible that BN might be able to adjust it for you (even though halo is not a good style for that) but it would cost more.

I checked Blue Nile and they don’t seem to have any halo settings for ovals in rose gold (if that’s your preference). But JA does.

That said, I’d go with this diamond from their site:

Thank you for noticing the cavity and the fluorescence!! I spoke to Blue Nile and they can fit any of these diamonds within the setting that I chose. However, I now have to choose a better diamond.

Based on your advice here are the top three that me and a representative found together. Please let me know which one is better overall, and if any of them have things that I cannot see such as another cavity or criteria I don’t know about, and if the diamond prices are too expensive.

My favorite is diamond #1. It has the least obvious bow-tie and looks great overall. The bow-tie on #3 is a bit more pronounced and #2 has the strongest bow-tie of them all.

The only issue might be the color grade I. Even with medium fluorescence is not equivalent to H and might have a warmish hue when set in a halo with other diamonds around it. It depends on how color sensitive you are. But as I said, the first diamond does have great specs so it’s possible it won’t show its color much. I’d give it a try. You can always return it within 30 days if you weren’t happy with it.

So I just got my quote for how much I was approved for and I have to go down on diamond price. However I was able to find some diamonds with H color in a smaller size carat weight.

Can you please take a look at these for me as soon as possible?? You’ve been so great, please tell me what you see. They are in order of Medium Fluorescence to no Fluorescence. Please take into account if you see bowties, cavities, the length width ratios, etc., and consequently which is the overall best diamond of the four.

P.S. I was all set for an oval diamond of 1.5 carrots in a halo, however, is a 1.0 carrat diamond inside a halo still a good look?

This is my ring setting again btw (they said that they can customize the setting and place an oval diamond into it).

Diamonds 1,2,& 3 do have a bow-tie, I would rule them out. Diamond 4 would be a perfect choice if it weren’t for the inclusions on the table. They concern me a little as they might be visible in person. But other than that, the diamond looks great so let’s hope this won’t be the case. Blue Nile has a great return policy so I’d say it’s worth the try.

In my opinion, a 1ct diamond looks great in a halo setting. The halo is designed to make the center stone look larger anyway so I don’t think the slight decrease in size will be an issue.

Thanks for the help, I’ll give it a try.
