Q&A: Looking for a Round or Oval Diamond for a Yellow Gold Halo Setting With a $3,200 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello – I am seeking some advice on picking out a diamond for an engagement ring. The setting will be yellow good, likely in a vintage style (I’m happy to provide a link from James Allen).

My budget for the diamond only is about $3000. The shape for my preferred setting is round. I believe this is the required information you need for now but please let me know if I can provide any additional detail.

Many thanks!

If you can link to the setting you want, that would help a ton. Thanks!

Apologies for a very belated response. I’ve decided to wait for a bit still as I wasn’t completely sure on the setting and am still choosing between a few. Conscious that this affects the diamond choice, this will prevent you from being able to help me at this point. Once I’ve got my setting confirmed, then I’ll reach back out for some of your expert advice.

No worries, take your time. I’ll be awaiting your email.

I have now made up my mind on the setting and am ready to find a diamond that suits it well! The link below is the setting I want to purchase from James Allen.

Contrary to my initial message, the diamond shape I want is oval and my budget remains roughly the same. I am fine with spending about $5,000 in total so diamond only would leave it around $3,200.

I haven’t really looked at any diamonds for this setting as my novice eye would not have a clue on what to look for so any and all recommendations you can help me make is appreciated!

Thanks for the update! Let’s focus on a beautiful oval diamond now.

These two have fantastic specs. I didn’t find any other options closer to $3200 that would be significantly larger of better quality.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you for sending the two options. After studying them a bit, I’m leaning towards the first link (G color) as it’s slightly less elongated, but both seem very similar however. I read on your website about the bowtie look in the ovals and (assuming I am looking at it correctly), I prefer the G color diamond in this category too.

The diamond looks great in the ring and the only thing I’d really like is to see it in person to truly get an understanding of how it looks. Given that isn’t possible until I order, is there anything else I should be looking for? Just want to make sure I am not missing anything here.

I’m glad you like it. That diamond is an excellent option in terms of eye-cleanliness, color, cut and bow-tie.

That said, I don’t think there’s anything else to be looking out for, anything to add. James Allen has a great return policy and if you weren’t happy with the diamond with it arrives, let me know and I’ll help you find a new one.

I’ve gone ahead and ordered the ring so exciting times ahead! Hopefully, I won’t need to return or anything but will reach out if I do.

That’s great news! Let me know how you like it when it arrives.
