Hello and thanks for your invaluable knowledge! I am shopping for a stone for an engagement ring. Her mother had a “chocolate” diamond engagement ring, and she’s expressed to me she would also like a brown diamond. I am looking to spend $3500 at a stretch, but $3k would be ideal for the ring. She wants a yellow gold setting, possibly a small diamond halo around a round cut brown diamond.
I looked at James Allen using the “rules” that would apply to white diamonds, but as I just read in one of your articles, those rules are not necessarily applicable. I am not necessarily looking to buy immediately (might if I found the right stone!) but I would like to see what a good fancy brown diamond looks like at the price I am looking to spend, and why you feel they are good choices.
Thank you!
…
By the way, I might be a little more flexible with my budget. I would do $4500 or less. I’ve just been looking a lot and I’m seeing a lot of stones between $2500 and $4000, and I’m not familiar with prices on settings. Like I said, ideally around $3500 but up to $4500.
Thanks again!
What do you think of this diamond?
Wow, beautiful! As long as you don’t think the inclusions (is that right?) on the top would be difficult to see in person, I think it’s great. There is the possibility that she would like something a little darker, like more of a rich brown. But not dark dark. I do like the size, and that the price leaves me some room to shop for a mounting.
I say give it a go. They have a great return policy in case you want to go darker.
I received the diamond, really like it. It’s very light brown, so it hints at a brown color in the right light. Today was the last day to return through James Allen, and the first time I’ve come across this diamond:
What do you think of that one vs. the one you recommended? (www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/fancy-color/brown/round-cut/1.25-carat-si2-clarity-sku-225797?a_aid=dmnd1357)
I emailed and they said they could do an exchange and extend the deadline. Your thoughts? Thanks for your help!
That is a great diamond. I say go for the switch.
