Q&A: Looking for a Round Diamond for a Platinum Setting With a $20k Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

I’m looking for an engagement ring similar to Tiffany Harmony with Bead Set Band.

My girlfriend tried it and really liked it.

Metal: Platinum
Diamond, Round, Brilliant Cut, 1.18cts, VS1, Color D and pave of 0.18cts

I’m curious about the value for money though and could use some advice on diamond (and ring) selection.

My budget is about GBP 12,500 and would look to buy a ring immediately.

I have found a couple of settings similar to the one your girlfriend had liked:
Blue Nile Petite Milgrain Diamond Engagement Ring
Blue Nile Cathedral Pavé Diamond Engagement Ring
Blue Nile Monique Lhuillier Tapered Milgrain Diamond Collar Ring

For that type of the setting, you don’t have to aim so high in terms of color. We don’t think it makes sense to spend a premium for higher grades: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/.

Lowering those two specs just a little bit can get you much better value for your money. H/I color would be where I’d go and it’ll still look fantastic.

Blue Nile LD07170688

This diamond is well cut and any will be very brilliant. There’s still room in your budget so let me know if you want to go higher in carats.

What do you think?

Many thanks for your response. I have found this setting on Brian Gavin Diamonds which I believe comes closest to the one my girlfriend likes.

I already mentioned to them that I would like to have diamonds reviewed by yourselves (and used this e-mail address to set-up the account).

I think I probably would like to increase carat size. Their choice of stones however appears to be somewhat limited? And also wondering whether their quality of cut justifies the premium they ask? I’ll be proposing to my girlfriend in Hawaii and they suggested to send the ring there for convenience purposes.

I have flexibility in the budget (capped at GBP 15,000). If we can find the right stone happy to order via them and get this finalized asap (these are the stones proposed so far).

Alternatively, can we perhaps buy the ring and stone separately have someone in the U.S. put it together and send it to Hawaii?

You’re welcome.

Brian Gavin is an excellent choice. He is known as one of the worlds experts when it comes to perfectly cut diamonds. BGD’s Signature diamonds are truly fantastic. They are all incredibly brilliant. They are a bit pricier, but if you care about the added fire and brilliance, it’s worth it.

All the diamonds you sent me are superbly cut, but those two VS2 diamonds are not eye-clean. The remaining H and G diamonds are perfect choices. The difference in color is not noticeable from anything above an H grade, so I’d go with either of those diamonds to get the best bang for your buck.

Setting wise, of course it’s possible to buy it separately. I suggest asking the company you’ll be buying it from what their terms would be to set the ring for you and sending it to Hawaii. I hope it works out well for you.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

I’ll proceed with them and buy the ring as a whole. Out of curiosity which out of the two would you take from personal preference the H or the G?

Personally, I’d pick the G diamond. The difference in size won’t be perceptible and its cut is slightly better. So that would be my choice.

Which one would you prefer?

I picked the G myself yesterday, also I’ve wired them the money today so make sure to check in with them at the end of the month.

That’s great news! I hope you’re happy with it when you receive it.

If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.

Have a great day.

Hi, hope you’re well.

I was just wondering what I need to bring with me to the FedEx Center to pick up the ring next week?

I suggest either contacting JA and asking them or calling FedEx directly. Either of them will tell you more.
