Q&A: Looking for a Round Diamond for a Petite Cathedral Pave Setting With a $3,200 Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi

I’ve spent a lot of time reading your articles, very informative but a lot of information to take in!

I am thinking of going for the following combination:

Ring:
Petite Cathedral Pavé Diamond Engagement Ring

Diamond
Blue Nile LD11942122

Would just like some advice before I move ahead.

The diamond looks eye clean to me but I would like some advice. Have I gone too high or low on any of the specs e.g. would it make much difference to go higher or lower? Don’t want to overpay but equally, want it to look amazing!

This combination is around my budget but could flex either way if you suggest it would be worth it.

The diamond you picked is eye-clean, but I’m a bit concerned about how cloudy it looks. The cloud listed as the first clarity characteristic could be an issue, it might negatively impact the stone’s brilliance.

I found one with no clouds, slightly better cut and basically the same price:
Blue Nile LD11938758

Color-wise, it’s going to look identical to a G.

What do you think?

Thanks so much for the fast response. It’s great to get some expert advice.

The diamond you found looks good, I think I can see couple tiny marks but guess they won’t be seen with human eye and is expected for this price point?

Is it definitely going to look ok or would it be beneficial to try up the budget a bit? Will it make that much difference to untrained eye?

Exactly as you say. Those tiny imperfections are not going to be visible in person. As far as a pave goes, I color is perfectly fine, it won’t show any yellowness. If you check out the setting description below, you can see that the melee diamonds are also graded “I”. It’s a perfect fit.

Amazing then I will go for this.

Only thing is I think I’ll need to wait a few weeks and I think best to be in 30 days just in case need to change anything?

Yep, I’d do exactly that. Should the diamond be gone by then (good diamonds move pretty quickly), send me a quick email and I’ll find you a new one.

As you predicted that diamond has gone, I’m now ready to move forward so are you able to suggest another similar good quality diamond? Happy to increase budget a little (few hundred dollars or so) if you feel this can get me noticeably better diamond.

New diamond coming right up:
Blue Nile LD11667005

It’s absolutely fantastic. I didn’t find any other options in the ~$2,500 price range that would be significantly larger or better cut.

Amazing I’ll get this ordered shortly before it goes!

Thanks for all the help 🙂

Sounds great! I’m glad I could help you.
