Q&A: Looking for a Pear-Shaped Diamond for a White Gold Halo Setting Within a $6k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

I am looking at the 14K WHITE GOLD PAVE HALO AND SHANK DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING (PEAR CENTER) on James Allen and am a little overwhelmed by all of the potential loose diamond options.

I have read your article on Pear Shaped Diamonds, which has been a very helpful starting point, but I am not sure which diamond is going to be the best based on my budget of around $6k.

Any additional advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I’ll be happy to help you find the right diamond. Just to make sure I understand, the budget you mentioned is for the diamond only or for the entire ring?

$6k would be for setting and diamond together. I can be a little flexible on it, but ideally, it wouldn’t be much more than $6k.

One thing to note is she has small hands and fingers (4.5 ring size) and when she tried on a 1.5 carat it looked too big. Not sure if that helps at all! I’d be happy to answer any other questions.

Alright, great. Thanks a lot for the additional info.

Look at these pear shapes that I found on JA:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/0.90-carat-g-color-vs2-clarity-sku-6041270?a_aid=dmnd1357

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/1.00-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-sku-6173911?a_aid=dmnd1357

They are different in shape, but both of them look very brilliant and eye-clean.

What do you think?

I’m concerned that with a longer diamond it will take up too much of her finger. Is the .9 carat one you sent considered long? Although the 1 carat looks a little short and “fat” too, but that is too the untrained eye, so I could be way off.

I did notice the 1 carat color is H vs the .9 carat being color G. Is there a big difference in appearance between .9 carats and 1 carat and color H vs G?

She is not as much concerned if it is 1 carat vs .9, more that it really shines and is eye catching, so whatever gets me that!

Hopefully these questions make sense, if you need more clarification let me know. I really appreciate the help!

Yes, they do look different and the 1ct one is a bit “fatty.” Not everyone likes it but I sent it anyways to see what you think.

The 0.90ct one isn’t too long. But “too long” is very subjective. Proportionally, that diamond is perfect.

The 0.90ct would look bigger than the 1ct I sent you. It’s all in the proportions. You can see the actual measurements there. As for the color, G and H are virtually identical, so there is no problem there.

I definitely like the .9 carat proportions better. Are there any others of similar shape that you would recommend? Bigger carat, different color grade etc.? Or do you think the one you sent is the best option for my budget?

One last question, on the original .9 carat you think is the best option, it looks like there are black dots in(?) the diamond on the middle left and top right (assuming tip facing toward you). Are those as visible as they appear to me?

No, the inclusions there aren’t going to be visible to the naked eye. Since the photo is 20x enlarged, you can easily spot them. But that’s not the case in real life.

Wanted to let you know I am purchasing the .9 carat that you originally recommended. Really appreciate the help, made my life a lot easier!

That’s excellent news! I’m glad I could help you with the process.
