Q&A: Looking for a Pear-Shaped Diamond for a Rose Gold Sapphire Setting Within a $2k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi! I live in France and have been trying to look for an engagement ring for some time now. I have to say that your site really helped a lot. I am now able to better understand what to look for out there as far as gemstones and diamonds are concerned.

I couldn’t find a better value than the James Allen website and I narrowed my choice of a ring but I still hesitate on the diamond and I guess I could really need your help 🙂

Can you send me a link to the ring you like on JA? I’m happy to recommend the best diamond for it. Can you also tell me your budget for the center stone?

I’m still hesitating but I like this ring :
14K ROSE GOLD ALTERNATING PEAR SHAPE ENGAGEMENT RING

I have a $2000 USD budget for the ring.

I found this diamond that is a bit above the budget but could eventually do:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/0.56-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-sku-3589406?a_aid=dmnd1357

With this sapphire:
www.jamesallen.com/gemstones/blue-sapphire/0.91-carat-pear-sku-20441?a_aid=dmnd1357

That diamond is a no-go. Medium fluorescence on such a high color grade usually causes haziness. Also, I would definitely avoid extremely thick girdle.

You can easily go with something like this and it is going to look identical (better, even):

Regarding the sapphire, I’m unable to help you with that, sorry. We are diamond experts. I suggest talking directly to the JA customer service about it.

I had a problem with James Allen, they do not ship to France!

I am going to to go with Blue Nile for the diamond, the setting will still be a rose gold ring with a sapphire and a pear shape diamond. I have read that it can be ok with a J diamond on a setting with rose gold, what do you think about that?
I have seen two diamonds that I thought might do the trick :
Blue Nile LD08126545
Blue Nile LD09854241

Is the price difference worth it?

That’s a bummer, but I think Blue Nile is a better choice after all, they are based in Europe (they have an office in Ireland) so you won’t pay any import fees, just the regular VAT (21%).

I wouldn’t recommend J color for a pear shape diamond. Fancy shapes don’t refract light just as well as round diamonds and thus tend to show their true color more. You should stick with an H+.

LD08126545 is beautiful, but I found something for a better price:
Blue Nile LD09360196

After having checked I think I’ll go for this one!Thank you again for your time!

If you can also write me back once you receive the ring, that would be great. I’d love to know how you like it in person.

Thank you!

I will only order the diamond on Blue Nile though, I found a sapphire and a jeweler in my hometown willing to work with me on reproducing the ring.

I’ll send the pics and my feedback when I receive the diamond and when the ring’s done if you’re interested 😊

Absolutely!

A little follow up.

We have just finished the ring with the craftsman and it looks stunning with the sapphire.

Thanks again for your wise advise 😊

It looks beautiful, thank you so much for sharing the picture with me. I’m glad that you are happy with your new ring.
