I am looking to purchase a diamond engagement ring. I have found your site very helpful and have limited my search based on your recommendations. I believe I have found a great stone and setting, but I figured I would avail myself of your offer to find a great stone/get your input on the one I have currently chosen. I am almost certainly set on the setting which is a white gold tension setting from JamesAllen (search 8809W) or:
https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/tension/14k-white-gold-spiral-tension-set-engagement-ring-item-197?a_aid=dmnd1357
This setting limits the diamond size to 1.5 carats, which is fine because my budget for the stone alone is ball parked at 10k. I am interested in a round diamond for a white gold setting, so using your guidelines I have limited my search to Color- H, Clarity- SI1 (eye clean). I was amazed to see how different SI1’s can be from each other and think JamesAllen does a great service by providing the ability to see the actual diamond. Below is the diamond that I think looks the best given these criteria, but I would love some alternatives, or possible explanation why this diamond might not be as great as it appears (I have a harder time seeing inclusions on this stone than I do on most of the higher rated stones on James Allen, including some of their IF stones that have small black marks on the exterior of the stone. I assume it is because I can only make out the black marks and there are other inclusions that count but I’m just not seeing them). The cut grade is only “Very Good”, so I’d be particularly interested in a stone you select that is equal in every other aspect but is a superior cut, as well as if you feel the difference in price would be justified. I believe you do mention that an ideal cut would be noticeably (which I take to mean to the average person looking closely) more brilliant than a “very good” cut, if that is the case I would certainly consider paying for things that can be noticed by the naked eye.
The Stone is SKU 216327, or try link below.

If there is any added info you need that I left out, please feel free to ask. Thank you for your help.
I am not a fan of the cut. I would much rather go with this diamond:

Its eye-clean, better cut and the same price. With that setting, you won’t see a difference between an I and H color.
What do you think?
That one looks very nice. I was just a little worried about being able to see some yellow in the diamond, since that’s the only thing I’ve ever really been able to see when looking in person. I don’t think the diamonds we were looking at in person were GIA certified though. Obviously you would know better, so a regular person with a naked eye wouldn’t really see a difference between I and H in this case? What about the setting effects the color choice? Thanks for your help.
A well cut I color will look whiter and brighter than a poorly cut H color. So stick with the I.
Thank you for your input, I was just a little concerned with the color since with this setting the stone will be visible from the side as well as the top. If I could just get your input on these last two option (1 from your previous suggestion and 1 from my searching). I can really only (think) I see the color difference when I put two browser windows side by side, and I am unable to see any of the inclusion (when I set the browser to 50% zoom).
I’d stick with my original recommendation. I don’t like the feint grey lines on the H SI1. I think those will be more visible in more natural lighting (like your living room).
Good to hear. Thanks for all your help, I placed the order today!
Sounds great. Let me know how it looks when it arrives.
