Q&A: Looking for a 1.5 Ct. Diamond for a Solitaire Yellow Gold Setting for ~$6000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hey, I’m looking for a ring with an asscher cut diamond, ideally at least 1.5 ct in a yellow gold solitaire setting. Been looking around but I just don’t know enough to make a call. I’d like to keep the whole package to ~$6000 if I can and id love some help!

I can’t seem to find the others but I think she wants something bigger than the one in that pic but definitely that style. Thanks!

I’ve been poking around a bit more… and I’m starting to think I may have to go a bit higher than $6k to get what I want… I also may be interested in an emerald cut in addition to an asscher. Her first choice was an asscher, but I think she may like an emerald as well. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Not to keep spamming you, but here are a few listings I’m looking at that seem to be in the right ballpark.

Both the 1.70 and 1.72 are great (no point spending the same for a smaller diamond). I do like the cut on the 1.70ct if you can stretch your budget to that.

I think it will look great in a yellow gold setting.

Hey – I’ve still been poking around for the right stone, and I think I’m going to find a local jeweler in NYC to set it for me… anyway, I came across these guys, who seem to have pretty good prices, and I wanted to hear your opinion as I know you guys have come across many companies… also do you think J or K color is too far to go? I feel like I can get away with a lower color grade because she wants it in an 18k Yellow Gold setting set very low.

These both seem to be pretty clean & symmetrical, but major difference in price going from I to J.

A very similar stone (to my untrained eye) to the I VS1 on James Allen is about $1k more: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/asscher-cut/2.00-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-sku-244096?a_aid=dmnd1357

There is even a K color which isn’t quite as symmetrical, but still looks pretty nice, and that’s very affordable.

Would really love your guidance/thoughts on this retailer and these stones.

I would strongly recommend not going to B2C. They are a terrible company. I tried to secret shop them but gave up after the first three diamonds I picked were unavailable. We have had terrible feedback from readers about their service as well. We obviously love JA, but there are plenty of other sites that are far superior to B2C. I would recommend either one of these:

www.since1910.com
www.ritani.com

Heck, as much as we dislike Bluenile.com, I’d take them over B2C.

Wow – OK – noted. What are your thoughts about how far down the color scale it’s ok to go?

Are you decided on a solitaire  or will there be some accent/pave diamonds?

It’s going to be a solitaire. Yellow Gold, very low set.

You can go down to J on most sites. With JA you can try your luck at K colors…

I emailed a while back asking for advice on some Asscher cuts but now that my GF has done a bit of shopping around/trying on, she’s settled on an Oval shape, so now I’m back on the hunt. Here’s what I’m hoping to find:
– Oval cut diamond 1.5ct+
– l/w ratio no more than ~1.5 (she doesn’t like them super long looking)
– going to be in an 18k Yellow Gold setting
– $10k max

I’ve read that flourescence can help lower color stones, and I’m curious how to tell if that’s the case? These for example:
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.70-carat-j-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-184593?a_aid=dmnd1357
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/2.04-carat-k-color-vs1-clarity-sku-127336?a_aid=dmnd1357

I like the J, but not the K.
