Q&A: Looking for a 0.50-0.75 Ct. Oval Fancy Yellow Diamond for ~$2500

By Mike Fried,

Thank you for the excellent site. Armed with my limited knowledge now, I’ve done a bit of searching online for a yellow coloured diamond for an engagement ring and I thought I’d ask you for some advice on whether they’re any good or if you have any other suggestions.

Requirements-
budget- $AUD3000-3500
Colour- fancy light yellow- fancy yellow
setting- diamond will sit in a halo, single thin band with micro pave halfway down.
metal- white gold or platinum
Size- I’m hoping for dimensions near the 5x7mm mark (eeek, I’m not sure if that’s possible for my budget).
Carat doesn’t matter. Realistically, somewhere in the 0.50-0.75carat mark.

This is what I found so far,

http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/yellow-oval-shape-diamond-63ct-fancy-yellow-si2-oval-shape-beautiful-cut-r4613 (this one does tick my boxes but I’m hoping for just that little bit bigger)
https://www.leibish.com/yellow-diamond/0.76ct-fancy-intense-yellow-oval-si1-44594-10873#aid=y not sure about this one
https://www.leibish.com/yellow-diamond/0.75ct-light-yellow-oval-vvs1-32079-8951#a_aid=y not sure about the polish
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/fancy-color/yellow/oval-cut-0.59-carat-si1-clarity-sku-225255?a_aid=dmnd1357 (not too much info and has a fairly large bow tie)
and just to throw in another colour that I thought might look nice https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/fancy-color/yellow/oval-cut-0.72-carat-vs2-clarity-sku-225078?a_aid=dmnd1357

What do you think about the above diamonds? Are there any others you might suggest that fit my criteria?

I have not had good feedback from readers about diamonds by lauren. I was actually thinking of reaching out to them about recommending them, so I asked for feedback from readers. They were unimpressed.

Of the others, here are my favorites:

Thanks for the quick reply.

Of the two you recommended I’m more favouring the James Allen one.

because
1. the colour and clarity (the clear/white feather across the table) are both acceptable to me
2. the carat and the price tag also work for me

I have a couple of questions on it though and I hope your expert eye could give me some guidance on the other little details. I guess these other little things may swing me towards buying it or not.

The GIA certificate is missing a couple of details. Namely, fluorescence, cut, polish and their grades. Is it advisable to buy a diamond without those details. I’m no diamond expert so maybe your eyes might be able to tell me from that high res video any of those details.

Along the questioning of the cut, the diamond has a fairly large bow tie effect across the table/crown. I’ve only read about bowties and that the smaller the better. I’m not sure what sort of effect this bow tie might have on the diamond and on the ring itself once mounted and after a period of time.

Your advice would be appreciated.

That is pretty common on fancy color certificates. I see no glaring issue with the look of the diamond but you can ask JA’s gemologist to inspect it.

There is a bowtie, but I have yet to see an oval fancy color that doesn’t have one.

Thanks, you’ve been great help so far. I’ve spoken to James Allen and they can’t give me more details on that diamond.
They also suggested a diamond (https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/fancy-color/yellow/oval-cut-0.95-carat-si2-clarity-sku-228803?a_aid=dmnd1357 ) which I wasn’t impressed at all especially with the black mark in the centre.

I saw another diamond and thought I would get your suggestion on that

What do you think?

I agree with you that the 0.95 should be avoided. The 0.55 is nice as well, but I’d recommend the 0.59. It will look larger.
