Looking for floating diamond necklace with a budget of $1000 to $1200. Is it best to find a diamond and then have it put in a setting of that necklace? Should I call Blue Nile?
You are leaning towards the right direction. It’s a good idea to cherry-pick the best diamond and then have it set.
Have a look at this option:
Blue Nile Petite Bail Pendant
Blue Nile LD07642385
This diamond is beautifully cut and will be incredibly brilliant.

What do you think?
Thanks for the code that will come in handy. I would like it to be floating where the chain is attached to either side of the setting like this pic below. I did look into this last night more and started communicating with Blue Nile and I will use you to tell me best value. I heard that my state NJ has no tax when ordering online which is good. Seems to be better like you said to pick diamond and have it set. Like I read online I am willing to sacrifice some color and clarity if it cannot be seen to naked eye to increase carat and want to make sure it’s still a good quality diamond.
You’re welcome.
Regarding the setting, I think it’s a good idea to talk to the BN custom service and see what they can come up with (if they can adjust the setting from their inventory to your needs).
Color-wise, I color is usually what we recommend for necklaces, but when I searched for the diamond for you, this H-color one happened to be a better value than some of the Is, that’s why I sent it to you.
I hit send too early. I also want best value an the chain, want it to look good and I don’t think it matters if it’s silver or white gold or something else. My focus is on getting best looking diamond sacrificing a little unseen quality in exchange for larger size. Cut needs to be well for brilliance I assume. Need this in about a month for wife’s 40th birthday. Below is diamond I looked at with Blue Nile. My total budget is $1000 to $1200. Wondering if I should make sure diamond is at $1000 level so I get certificate?
Thank you for your help.
No worries about the certificate. There are $400 diamonds that are properly certified, so you don’t have to hit the $1000 mark for that.
The diamond you are looking at is beautifully cut, but seems to have a lot of inclusions. It’s up to your taste. If you don’t mind the imperfections, go for it.
Will the inclusions in the one I chose be able to be seen. I may be able to see them in the 360 view. Is that right?
Well, they might be. When someone looks at the necklace from a close distance, they will be noticeable.
Thanks. I’ll work with Blue Nile on the diamond you sent.
Sure, let me know how it goes.
I purchased your recommended diamond and chose a floating necklace pendant and just submitted the order with Blue Nile. Thank you!
That’s great news!
I hope you love it when you receive it. If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.
My only reservation is the setting isn’t exactly the one she wanted but they only had a few styles to pick from with making your own. She’ll like it but I wish I could have them put it in the setting I want but I don’t think there is anyway that is as good a value as that, right?
But she is OK with this:
Blue Nile Bezel Set Solitaire Pendant Setting
Well, can you send a picture of the setting you have in mind? I could dig around a little and see if there are better choices available.
I don’t think this style is available on Blue Nile build your own. But I’d be open for anything comparable with same diamond just a setting like pic above.
How about something like this?
www.jamesallen.com/fine-jewelry/design-your-own-pendants/18k-white-gold-4-prong-wire-basket-solitaire-pendant-setting-item-16979?a_aid=dmnd1357
Yes. I like that one since that’s the style my wife wants. If I can get that setting with a good diamond with about same specs as the Blue Nile for about the same price then I wouldn’t mind returning Blue Nile and buying that one.
If Blue Nile won’t give me same setting for a good price (I’ll call them) then I’ll return and buy James Allen.
Ok. I like this diamond for you:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.40-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2097651?a_aid=dmnd1357
Let me know what you decide on in the end.
That is nice. I will look at something maybe closer to 0.5 carat. I haven’t spoken to Blue Nile yet but I will do it as soon as I can. I’ll just speak to anyone there so it’s not too hard to coordinate with same representative. The main concern is being able to get the setting she wants. Like the setting I emailed pic of last. I’ll work this out this week.
I found these two superbly cut diamonds that might suit you better:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.46-carat-f-color-si2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2157136?a_aid=dmnd1357
They both look lovely.
Thoughts?
I found a coupon for $100 off my first order. Do you have any better coupon than that?
Do you see a diamond that is about 0.5 carat or larger that still seems great to the naked eye. I’ll go up to about $1,000 for the diamond itself.
……
If the 360 view is always of the exact diamond which I’m sure is the case, I love the quality of the 0.46 carat diamond you picked last. Others with seeming better classed clarity, I can see the imperfections. As long as with a very close inspection with naked eye they cannot be seen and it look brilliantly beautiful. I’m happy. Let me know what you find for diamond larger carat (if it doesn’t sacrifice any visible quality) and I’ll look to place the order with James Allen.
Thanks!
Unfortunately, that BN coupon is the only one I can provide.
I love that I-color diamond as well. It’s superbly cut.
The only larger option I could find in that range was this one:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.48-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2323320?a_aid=dmnd1357
And as you can see, there’s basically no difference in size between this one and that 0.45ct one.
I place my order with James Allen for what she really wanted. Thank you!
That”s great news!
If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.
