Q&A: Looking for Eye-clean Round Cut, 1-1.3 Ct.

By Mike Fried,

I’m looking to buy an engagement ring from James Allen in the first week of January.

In terms of the diamond, I am looking for the following specifications:

Shape: Round

Colour: J

Clarity: Eye clean

Polish:Excellent

Symmetry: Excellent

Lab:GIA

Cut:Ideal

Carat: 1 to 1.3

Price: $5000 to $6300

Depth:58 to 62

Table:58 to 62

Fluorescence: None

I have searched on James Allen’s website for these characteristics, however I am struggling most with working out whether the diamond would be eye clean.

Are you able to suggest some diamonds that match these characteristics (the bigger the better) and would be eye clean?

I am also interested in buying a setting to go with the diamond, specifically the Platinum Six Prong Wire Basket Engagement Ring (Item #11011P).

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for that recommendation! It looks beautiful.

I’ve also been in touch with James Allen, and they recommended this diamond: https://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1501925.asp

There is obviously a bit of a price difference. Other than that, how do these two compare? This is such a big purchase, so I want to make sure I get the best I can!

…….

I wrote to James Allen and asked how the two diamonds compare. For

some reason two salespeople got back to me independently – one of them
recommended the 1501925, and the other recommended the 1531572.

The one who recommended 1531572, said:

“I like 1531572 a lot, and the only inclusions are the twinning wisps
which will face up white and actually would make the diamond look
whiter. It has great proportions and is a great size for the price.”

The one who recommended 1501925, said:

“Diamond 1501925 stands out to me as a better option for you because
while it is very slightly smaller it is eye-clean and has a nice even
distribution of color hue in the image. This is indicative of great
light performance- sparkle, fire, brilliance. It has a great price
point as well.

While diamond 1531572 is a bit larger, I can clearly see that there is
an uneven distribution in the light reflection and that the most
important area, the table, shows up darkened which is indicative of
light leaking right through it. With this comparison, I can only
suggest 1501925 as it will be the brighter of the two.”
Safe to say, I am quite confused. Do you have an opinion as to which
would be better?

I would stick with the original recommendation so long as it doesn’t break the bank. I think both diamonds are beautiful and the extra size will be noticeable. I don’t put as much weight on the light performance 2d photo as that second sales rep did.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for your help again.

I’m really thinking about buying the 1531572 diamond that you recommended in the next couple of days. I will get the 11011W setting to go with it.

This is a big purchase for me and a tough decision to make. What are the reasons for you recommending this diamond in particular? I’d like to be comfortable that I’ve made the right decision, given how many diamonds there are out there.

1) I love the cut of the diamond. I prefer the table size of 57/58.

2) It’s eye-clean
3) The only diamonds I saw that were also nice were several hundred dollars more (at least).

Thanks a lot for your reply Mike, I really appreciate it. I have put this diamond on hold now. I have also put another diamond on hold, and I was wondering if you could have a quick look to see that I am still getting the best?

The numbers are

1544990 and the one you have looked at, 1531572.

Again, I really want to thank you for your help.

I prefer the J Si1. It looks better than the VS2.

I got the J SI1. Thank you so much for your help, it made all the difference, and gave me the confidence I needed to go ahead with such a big purchase. I can’t wait to see it!

Did you see the diamond yet? How was it?

I’m picking up the diamond on 3 January. I’ll let you know once I’ve seen it.

Sounds great. Keep me posted.

I picked up the diamond and it looks great. Still need to get a setting for it though.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for writing and letting us know. I’m delighted that you were pleased with our help.

We wish you and your partner a life of happiness and fulfillment.
