Q&A: Looking for a 2+ Ct. Princess Cut Diamond for a Platinum Solitaire

By Mike Fried,

Hi there,
I’m entering a space I’m not very educated about. I think I have found a loose diamond I like (from Blue Nile) and it’s a 2.31 carat vs1, H, very good cut. But the cost is outrageous. I’m wondering if it makes sense to purchase via Blue Nile or if you have other recommendations on where to purchase.

Can send me a link to the diamond? I’ll take a look at it and then will be able to give you a more informed feedback. Also, can you tell me what style setting you are going to use?

Blue Nile is a reputable and established company and we recommend them to our readers often. We receive positive feedback about them.

Thanks. Here’s the link: Blue Nile LD07674129

Looking for a princess cut.

Thank you.

That is a beautiful diamond. I’m only a little concerned about the crystal in the middle. Can you ask Blue Nile for its photo?

I’m happy to suggest some alternatives for you. What style setting are you using for the ring?

I have asked for a photo. What about the more peculiar measurements (depth, table, polish, symmetry, etc.)? What do these represent and in your opinion, are these material considerations?

I have not landed on a setting; although it will most likely be platinum. Open to suggestions.

Thanks again.

The other parameters and measurements are fine, there are no red flags in the cert.

For metal, we always recommend white gold over platinum because of the huge disparity in upfront costs: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/platinum-vs-gold/. Both metals require upkeep every few years. WG needs to be dipped to retain its color and luster while PT needs to be cleaned and polished because it gets scratched and duller over time. So in the end, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run. And I’d recommend 14k white gold. It’s cheaper and more durable than 18k.

Regarding the style setting, are you going to use a solitaire, a pave/side stone or a halo?

I know there are no other red flags in this diamond as justified by the cost. I guess I was hoping that you guys would be able to recommend a similar diamond that might cost less.

As you stated earlier, Blue Nile is a very reputable company and has favorable reviews. However I was wondering if there may be other websites I should consider before purchasing this diamond.

To answer your question, I’m going for a solitaire.

Actually, the diamond is surprisingly ‘cheap’ (I don’t mean literally cheap, but its price is very low for a diamond that size and quality). I searched other websites for better alternatives and I couldn’t find anything comparable for less money.

Thank you for the info about the setting. For a solitaire, you can easily drop in color to an I and it’ll still look great. This way you can either get a larger diamond or save some money.
