Q&A: Looking for a 2.5 Ct. Pear-Shaped Diamond for a Pavé Setting

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

I’m in the market for a diamond (for an engagement ring) and would love to hear more information about your services. Please contact me to discuss further.

Thank you!

Can you also tell me what style of setting (solitaire, halo, pave or other), metal (platinum/white or yellow gold) and shape of diamond you’re looking for? Different settings suit certain colors better. One last question before I start the search, what’s your approximate budget?

Thanks for the info! I’ve attached a photo of my ideal ring – pave setting, platinum/white, pear shaped diamond. I’d love to stay around $10k for the budget… but do you think that’s realistic for a ring similar to the one attached?

Thank you for the information.

Have a look at this diamond:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/1.50-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-sku-2644683?a_aid=dmnd1357

It’s very well cut, eye-clean and going to look colorless in a pave style. It also leaves some space in your budget for the setting.

What do you think?

This diamond is beautiful! I may need to increase my budget, as I’m hoping to get at least a 2 carat diamond. When I set the initial budget of $10k, I really had no idea what the current diamond prices were.

Would you be able to recommend diamond options for a $15k budget, as well as $20k?

Thank you!

Thank you for the feedback.

I found these options:
Blue Nile LD08349587
Blue Nile LD08464716

They are both very well cut and perfect for any style of settings. If you’re willing to spend the extra buck, the 2.08 is noticeably bigger in measurements.

Let me know what you decide.

This diamonds are both excellent. I have some thinking to do.. I’ll let you know as soon as I make a decision.

Thanks so much!

Keep me posted. I’ll be waiting for your email.

So I’ve done a lot of research and have learned quite a bit more about Pear shaped diamonds.

I was wondering if you can send options in the 2.5 carat range. Ideally I’d like to stay with a length to width ratio between 1.5 and 1.6.

I need to make a final decision soon because I am planning to propose at the end of this month.

Thanks so much!

Since you’re looking for such high carat weight, I won’t find a quality diamond within the budget you mentioned. Here’s the best option with the quality I’d recommend and no bow-tie effect:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/2.54-carat-h-color-if-clarity-sku-2572933?a_aid=dmnd1357

Let me know what you think.

That’s a great one. What are your thoughts on this one as well?

……

Also, what are your thoughts on this one?
Blue Nile LD08145211

Is it too deep?

The issue with the stones you found is its strong fluorescence. It can cause a hazy look on I+ colors. That’s why I’d stick with my suggestion.

Sorry for the delay! I was out of town but returned last night and am looking to make a decision this week.

Wanted to get your opinion on one last diamond:
Blue Nile LD08509874

And thank you for the info. I read through it and fluorescence makes much more sense to me now 🙂

I’m afraid that the black crystals will be noticeable on such a big stone.

Have a look at this diamond:
Blue Nile LD06925449

or this one from JA:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/2.61-carat-g-color-si1-clarity-sku-1026433?a_aid=dmnd1357

They are both very well cut, eye-clean and with the quality I’d recommend.

What do you think?

Thanks so much – these are both excellent options! Sorry for all the questions- of course this is a big decision and big purchase so I just want to make sure I explore all my options.

I’m narrowing down my options and hoping to make a final decision ASAP. Would it be possible for you to give me your thoughts on this diamond.

I attached the GIA report as well.

Thank you again!

I can see black eye-visible crystals/inclusions on the stone you sent. But they are not listed in the certification. Are you sure that you sent the right video of the stone? Also, how much is the diamond?

Hi, wow, thank you for pointing that out!

I’ve been talking to a jeweler here in LA about getting a custom setting made. He sent me this diamond option and said he could do the setting with this diamond included for a total of $24k. His fee for the setting alone if I source my own diamond is $3k.

This is the jeweler I’m referring to: markbroumand.com

I just emailed stating that the diamond in the video appears different than the one in the original photo and GIA report. I’ll see what he says.

From the excellent options you’ve sent me, in leaning towards this one:
Blue Nile LD06925449

Thanks again.

Has the jeweler replied yet? I double checked with my colleague and we both think that the report is of a different diamond. This might have happened by accident, but he should be able to provide you with the right video of the stone.

Also, has he started the custom made design yet? If not, you could contact BN and ask if they can custom make the design for you, too. The jeweler has the right to charge you for choosing a stone elsewhere. But you could compare the prices and choose the best route.

Sorry for the delay – I was traveling the entire day from LA to France.

Thanks for checking in! The jeweler apologized for the mix up with the video and is supposedly waiting on the correct video file from his supplier.

Meanwhile, my girlfriend and I found a setting she’s obsessed with from Lauren B Jewelry (you can see it here), and we’ve been in touch with one of their reps – they’ve been super informative and great to work with so far (much better than the previous jeweler). They’re asking $3k for the setting alone if we provide our own diamond. They’ve also sent over a few diamond options, which they made a video of here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVjT0IRTf5I

Of these options, I like the 2.73 ct best (GIA report below). Their asking price for the ring, including the 2.73 diamond & setting is $27,950. What do you think?

In reviewing all of my top diamond options, my favorite is probably the original one you recommended (this one) which unfortunately is no longer available on JamesAllen. My fault for taking so long to decide!

So below are my current top options. The first one is a new option I included that I’d love your thoughts on if possible!

The more I learn about diamonds, the harder it’s becoming to select one! Is that a common problem? Lol

Thank you so much for all your help. It’s truly helped me feel more confident in making this decision. Feel free to send over additional options if you come across anything new that you like.

Thanks again!

I check the video and the 2.73 carat stone has quite a noticeable bow-tie effect. That’s why I prefer either my suggestion from BN or the stone you found on JA. This diamond is beautiful and there’s no bow-tie effect.

Let me know once you receive the right video of the stone you were offered.

I checked and didn’t find any better option at the moment. There might be a few new options in a couple of days.

Thanks so much. Let’s decide between those 2 options… I like the shape & price of the JA diamond, but I like the color of the BN diamond LD06925449. What are your thoughts? Do you think the warm color on the JA stone would stand out against an all-white setting? I know a little fluorescence is generally helpful for H color, but this JA stone has none.

We’re planning on getting this setting but in all white gold or platinum:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XSIylpBmAI

……

Also (and sorry for another email), I liked the 2.43ct diamond from Lauren B (shown here) but the depth is pretty low at 54.2%. Do you think the shallow depth would have a visible impact on the brilliance? GIA report attached.

The inclusion right on the table of the 2.43 carat stone from LB is eye-noticeable. That’s why I’d stick with one of the two stones we discussed.

My favorite is the 2.47 carat from JA. If you compare the measurements between this one and the BN stone, the difference is not as significant. There’s not only a little bow-tie effect and this stone is significantly less expensive.

Let me know what you decide.

I ran these 2 by my girlfriend and she actually likes the shape of the BN option better. Do you think 1.45 L-W ratio is too chubby or do think it will look good on the ring?

I believe that this is mainly the matter of your personal taste. If your girlfriend likes the stone from BN more, go for it. It’s a fantastic choice, too.

To give you an update: my girlfriend and I weren’t 100% on either stone — the BN option was too stumpy, and the JA option slightly too narrow. We really want to stick close to the 1.5 length-to-width ratio. We decided to wait for new stones to be released, and also went to a few local stores to compare color and clarity options, so we have a better idea of how they look in person.

With that said, what are your thoughts on this diamond:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/2.51-carat-g-color-vs2-clarity-sku-2872770?a_aid=dmnd1357

Thank you again for all the help!

It’s nice to hear from you again. That’s perfectly fine.

Yes, this diamond is a great option. It’s eye-clean, with great overall specs and no bow-tie effect. If you like it, go for it.

Thanks! Here’s one more option:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/pear-shaped/2.50-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-2854839?a_aid=dmnd1357

Do you think the bow-tie effect is too strong here or is it subtle enough to not notice much in person?

I was wondering if to send you this stone as well today. This option is also great. The bow-tie is just slightly visible. It’s not a problem.

Both of them are great options. So whichever of the two is your favorite, go for it.
