Q&A: Looking for 1.5 Ct. Stone for Tiffany Style Ring

By Mike Fried,

My fiance and I are looking for an engagement ring, and after reading your reviews, I have decided not to go with a Tiffany ring. I am searching for a diamond that is about 1.5 carats, a very brilliant, light colored one in E, F, or G with ideal cut. As for clarity, I don’t want any obvious black inclusions or other inclusions that really interfere with the brilliance of the diamond.

I was looking on James Allen and there are just so many diamonds, it’s overwhelming. Is this a good diamond to purchase? Is is a good value? The clarity is SI1 and I am not sure where the inclusions are, since I am not an expert.

Or is this one a better diamond for the value? The color is G, but I’m not sure if I can visually tell the difference between an E and a G. It is also SI1, and the inclusions are not too obvious to me.

If this isn’t a good one, can you suggest something else better? We can spend up to about $18-19K on the diamond itself, but less is better, of course. Thank you!

I think that the G is a better buy all around. It’s a slightly better cut (the depth is better) and its cheaper. I think its a no-brainer.

Thank you so much for the quick response.  Just a couple more questions.

Regarding that G diamond, looking at the photo again with the loupe, there is a white line around 8 o’clock that is fairly close to the centre. Is it still eye-clean? Will it detract from the brilliance and shine of the stone being in that location?

Here’s the link again:

The setting I intend to have is a six prong solitaire (the Tiffany look a like) and the wedding band will be channel set with princess cut stones. I am contemplating whether to have 18K white gold or platinum. Is there an advantage to using platinum over 18K white gold?

Thank you!

1) There is no reason to spend more on platinum.

2) I would ask JA to have their gemologist inspect the diamond to confirm that its eye-clean. I believe it is.

Thank you so much for your reply, but unfortunately, when I went to check again, that diamond is no longer available! So now I have to find another one. I’ve been looking at the slightly larger diamonds, as the What do you you think of these ones? Again, I am looking for minimum 1.50 carats, E, F or G, eye clean with a lot of brilliance, up to $18-19K for budget, but less is obviously better, to be set as solitaire style.

I’ve been looking at more diamonds, seems they improved the James Allen site. The diamond that you helped me pick was no longer available just a day after your response – I was too slow!

What do you think of this F diamond SI1? Is it eye clean or a good buy?

I’m getting a little tired of looking at diamonds and getting all confused, I want to buy it in the next few days. Do you think you can rank these diamonds with respect to value/good buy? I’m ok with paying a bit more if quality is visibly better, but less money is better. Again, eye clean, F or G, lots of brilliance, solitaire setting.

Thanks for your help. I feel bad for bothering you so much. Hopefully, this is the last time I bother you.

I’m still indecisive. Part of me knows I won’t be able to tell much difference in color, especially with a solitaire setting, and the diameter difference between a 1.35 carat and a 1.5 or 1.6 isn’t too noticeable. What do you think of these two? They are a better color, but smaller.

For the E color one, there is an extra facet on the table, is that a problem?

How about this one?

Which of these will be most brilliant? Thanks for your help.

The size difference is far more noticeable than a color upgrade. Check out this video to see why.
