Q&A: Looking for a 1.3 Ct. Princess Cut Diamond for a White Gold Pave/Side Stones Setting

By Mike Fried,

Thanks for creating this awesome website. I am looking for a 1.3 ct (at least) diamond within $6000 range. My total budget is $7000. I am not able to figure out what are best combinations of cut, color & clarity within this price range. It would be really helpful if you can suggest me something.

Here are the two links which i short listed so far –

I’m glad you find out website informative. We appreciate it. Now, let’s see how I can help you.

I looked at the diamonds you sent me and I’ve got some concerns with both of them.

That JA diamond’s L:W ratio is 1:09 which is a much higher than we recommend. Ideally, you should keep it below 1:05.

The cut and overall specs on the BN diamond are great, but we usually recommend ”I” color at the lowest for princess cut diamonds. They don’t refract light just as well as round diamonds and thus tend to show their true color more.
Also, you don’t have to aim for such a high clarity grade:

I’d be happy to find a better alternative for you. Can you tell me what style setting (solitaire, pave/side stones/halo) and metal (yellow/white gold, platinum) do you want to use? This may affect the colors that I recommend for the center diamond (as we explain in our post on color).

Once I know this, I’ll be able to help you more.

Thank you very much for helping me out. I am in the market for a 1.3 ct (at least) diamond on a princess cut with a pave/side stone setting in a white gold.

Thanks for the additional info.

I looked around and I love these diamonds for you:
Blue Nile LD07355716
Blue Nile LD06923777

They are both well cut and either of them will be very brilliant in that setting you’re using.

What do you think?

Thanks. Both of them looks good to me. I am kind of inclined towards James Allen as they have a better customer service. Can you recommend something from there as well?

We have heard otherwise about Blue Nile’s customer service. Based on the feedback from our readers, their service is perfectly fine. That said, I’m happy to offer you an alternative. Here is one very good JA options:

It looks great to me. Thoughts?

I ordered the ring from James Allen. i really appreciate your time.

That’s great news! I’m glad that I could help you decide on the diamond. I hope you’ll love it when you receive it. If you can also write me back once you receive the ring, that would be great. I’d love to know how you like it in person.
