Q&A: Help Finding the Best Diamond for a White Gold Halo Setting With Around $25 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi! She has a 3.75 size finger, and appreciate a round cushion or halo. I imagine a 1.6ct would suffice for her finger size especially since the band will be pricey. Thinking of spending about $20-25k tops.

Better than a color H, VS1, and Ideal cut. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Do I understand it correctly that you’re looking for a halo setting (with small stones around the center diamond)? And that you are interested in either a round or cushion cut? Then I’ll be happy to send you my suggestion.

Yes, the goal is a halo setting with a cushion (1st choice) or round (2nd choice) for the actual diamond. Her fingers are very narrow (3.75″) so I don’t want it to be TOO enormous (setting/thickness of the band/or diamond) — it should look elegant and refined.

I started searching for a few like those below — any other suggestions would be very helpful! Thank you. I’d also prefer conflict/blood-free diamonds.

2. https://www.brilliantearth.com/Cordoba-Diamond-Ring-White-Gold-BE1H1R871-1517746/

3. https://www.brilliantearth.com/Linden-Diamond-Ring-White-Gold-BE1D2485-4321553/

4. (might be too large/bulky) – https://www.brilliantearth.com/Fortuna-Diamond-Ring-Platinum-BE1M0177-1279026/

Thank you for sending the settings with what you like. At the same time, we don’t really like their business model. You can read more in our article about BE: https://www.diamonds.pro/reviews/brilliant-earth/

Have a look at these settings:
14K WHITE GOLD PAVE HALO AND TWISTED SHANK ENGAGEMENT RING
14K WHITE GOLD INFINITY HALO ENGAGEMENT RING
14K WHITE GOLD CUSHION OUTLINE PAVE ENGAGEMENT RING
14K WHITE GOLD TWISTED PAVE HALO ENGAGEMENT RING

And if you want to make sure that you get a conflict-free diamond, I suggest looking at CanadaMark diamonds from JA. When you scroll down to 10), you can read a little more in this article:

Have a look at these stones:

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.90-carat-g-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3762463?a_aid=dmnd1357

Both stones are very well cut, going to look colorless and with the quality I’d recommend.

What do you think?

‘ve heard great things about James Allen. My only concern is that their only showroom is in NYC. I’d like to see the setting and diamond in person before I commit to spending over $20k on a ring.
How are they with returns? Or do they have a shop in Washington DC?

From what you sent, I like the thinner bands the most (1st and 3rd links) primarily because her fingers are tiny. I feel a bulkier band would devour her finger. Same for the actual diamond. For a size 3.75 finger ( seems that James Allen only provides a size 4 though – any issues with that?)

Do you think a 2 carat diamond would be overbearing? I want it to look great and I’m fine with spending the money…but I just don’t want her to feel like she’s a rapper with enormous jewelry on her hands.

I would say that they are great with returns. So if there’s something you don’t like about the ring, just feel free to let them know and ask for change.

I am not sure if there’s another showroom except the one in NY. I suggest contacting them directly.

As for the size, I suggest looking at some 2.00 carat diamonds with similar settings in person. Just to get an idea of what it looks like and how big such a stone is. Also, have a look at the real measurements of the stone. I would say that what one thinks is small, the other thinks is too big. At the same time, a two carat diamond in a halo setting will be rather big. So let me know what you think and if you want to see a smaller stone, too.

Should I be paying attention to all three other categories (i.e: table, depth, polish, etc…?) If so, what should I be looking for?

Yes, we filter our search of cushions for depth up to 69%, table up to 70%. You don’t need to be too cautious about polish and symmetry. Unless the grade is poor, you don’t need to worry about it.

Thanks and what about the width of the setting? As she does have slim fingers, I assume anything less than 2mm? Her ring size is 3.75

I believe that the choice of setting is mainly the matter of your personal taste. Whichever you like the most, go for it.

So it seems that I’ve narrowed it down to a few diamonds and settings and will be going up to the James Allen showroom in the next month.

Thanks, you’ve been great!
