Q&A: Help Finding a Round Diamond for a White Gold Halo Setting with a $1,500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi there, I’ve spent Aprx 20 hours reading absolutely everything you guys have to offer, and it has helped me immensely, so thank you for that. I will soon be popping the big question and am in the market for a perfect ring. I’ve decided on a white gold halo setting. What colour do you recommend? This diamond from JA seems too good to be true. The colour is only a k, by the cut and price seem amazing. What do you think?

I’m happy that you find our site so helpful.

The main issue with the diamond you sent is the VG cut. It’s cut too deep, which can affect light refraction (i.e. less brilliance). It will also appear smaller. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/carat-weight/

Can you tell me what style of setting (solitaire, halo, platinum or other) and metal (platinum/white or yellow gold) you are going to use? I’ll be happy to help you with the search.

Thanks for the reply. I’m 99% sure I will be going with the following setting:

Is there any sort of formula you use to know if the diamond is too deep? Or is that generally the norm with a very good cut? I’m not overly concerned with size, I just want the best brilliance I can get.

Thank you for the info.

There is a cut we recommend: depth between 59-62.8% (ideally under 62.5) and table 55-59%. In our experience, these diamond return light with the highest brilliance. The diamond you sent me is off the charts deep.

We recommend H+ color grade for the setting you like. I’m sorry I forgot to ask you what your approximate budget for the diamond is? Then I can send you my suggestions.

Right now my budget is around $1500 usd. If there is a significantly better option for a larger or nicer diamond, I could also probably make that work.

How would this one look? The table and depth are right between your parameters, and the price point is excellent. Thoughts?

Thank you for the info.

Since the diamond you sent has a cloud listed as an only inclusion on an SI2 clarity grade, I’m afraid that it’s going to negatively influence the appearance. I found this diamond for you to look at:

It’s a very well cut, eye-clean diamond you can set in the halo setting.

Let me know what you think.

I put it on reserve! Thanks for the help.

My pleasure. Let me know if you decide for this stone.
