Q&A: Help Finding a Round Diamond with Fluorescence for a White Gold Setting with a $3500 Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

I’d like to get a diamond with a somewhat blue fluorescence for an engagement ring (white gold). My budget is $3500, but I’d like to stay below $3000.

I’ve found this: www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.73-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1986514?a_aid=dmnd1357
And was about to buy, but thought I’d get some advice first.

Thanks!

The diamond you found is well cut and eye-clean, but we don’t recommend medium fluorescence on G color.
It usually causes haziness: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/fluorescence/.

For a diamond where the blue fluorescence is fine, I’d recommend Brian Gavin’s Blue collection: https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/brian-gavins-blue-diamonds-with-fluorescence/.

‘Brian Gavin Blue’ is a selection of diamonds with blue fluorescence (and thus cheaper), however, each diamond was handpicked and inspected by them to make sure fluorescence has no negative effect whatsoever. That’s why we believe that diamonds from this line offer a great value. You get the added brilliance of the BGD perfectly cut diamonds for a lower price.

Have a look at this diamond:
www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.743-g-vs2-round-diamond-ags-bl-104087405003&a_aid=y
It’s superbly cut and will be very brilliant in any setting you choose.

What do you think?

How blue will the diamond you sent me appear? I’m basically looking for a diamond that still looks clear, just reflects a bit more blue perhaps than normal, if that makes sense? What color should I look for with medium blue fluorescence?

Thanks again!

I don’t think the blue will be recognizable much. In rare lighting scenarios (club lighting) you’ll see a faint blue hue (it’s only medium). I think the added brilliance of the BGD diamond is worthwhile in this case. I really love that diamond.

As for medium blue fluorescence, we recommend it for I and lower colors.

For that price, I’d like to get a larger stone, perhaps without the blue tones. I’m also not a big fan of the black inclusion in that stone.

I was just looking through the BGD collection and the prices seem reasonable (0.9 I SI1 around $3500). What color should I be looking for if I go this route? Will I still appear colorless?

Can you tell me what style setting (solitaire, pave/side stones/halo) do you want to use? Different settings suit different colors better.

I’d like to do something like this: 161217-01

I’m going to have a local jeweler make the ring, but am going to buy the diamond online. Also, I’d like to buy it soon, like early next week.

Great, thanks for the clarification. For a side stone setting like that one, you can easily drop in color to an I and it’ll still look great. That way, you can get a larger stone (or save some money).

Have a look at these options:

Blue Nile LD06595897

Both of these diamonds are fantastically cut and either of them will be very brilliant in that setting.

What do you think?

I like the Blue Nile diamond! I also like that it’s over 0.8 ct.

What do you think of this one: Blue Nile LD07272470

Or this one: Blue Nile LD07066807

Is it OK to buy from Blue Nile, sight unseen? I’m a little afraid of finding out it has a black inclusion in the middle of the stone.

I’m glad you like it. I know it might feel a little odd, not seeing the diamond’s real picture, but when you stick with higher clarity, it’s fine. Also, that diamond’s clarity plot looks great, there are no red flags in the cert.

Regarding the diamonds you sent me, the LD07272470 is fantastically cut. However, the clarity plots of both of the diamonds are a little troubling (we never know the location and size of the crystals). You’d be happier with something like this:
Blue Nile LD07220658
It’s beautifully cut.

Thoughts?

Oh, I like that one! OK, I’m going to move forward and purchase one of the Blue Nile diamonds you sent me. I’ll use the email address that I have been using here so you guys get credit.

It seems like the 0.81 Ct you sent me is the best bang for the buck, so I’ll probably go with that one.

One last question, what do you think of this one: Blue Nile LD07428702?

It’s pretty close to the absolute limit I can spend on the stone alone. How do you think the 0.83 ct stone will look in this setting?

The diamond you found is slightly larger than the 0.81 ct one, but the size won’t be perceptible and the cut on the 0.81 is much better. It’ll be much more brilliant.
I’d go with that one, it’ll make a beautiful ring.

Also, I figured I’d pass it along. Blue Nile just messaged us. They love the education we provide for consumers and offered a coupon for our readers. If you use this unique coupon code, you’ll get $100 off any purchase over $1,000. [contact us for your own unique coupon code]

Just thought I’d let you know I purchased the .81 ct diamond you recommended and received it today.

It looks great! Thanks again!

That’s great news! It’s been a pleasure helping you.
