Hello,
I am looking for some help shopping for an engagement ring. I know that I’m looking for a solitaire with a round cut. I have a budget of around $3500, but have a little wiggle room.
I’ve read through most of the articles on your site, but still feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of choice. Heck, I thought I’d be able to at least find a ring “style” with no issue, but it turns out there are tons of solitaire bands over a wide spectrum of prices and they all look basically the same to me? If it matters for the search, I’d be looking at a size 5.5 ring, but it may need to be adjusted down to size 5.
As you can tell, I’m a bit overwhelmed. Thank you for any direction/help you can provide.
Let’s start simple. Would you like to have four prongs or six prongs on the setting? This can narrow things down a bit.
I think 4 prongs? Not to sound dumb, but is there an argument to be made for one vs the other?
Generally speaking, the less metal, the more the diamond is exposed and the more light can pass through it. But it’s not that crucial. It’s really just a fashion choice.
Look at these settings:
Classic Simple Solitaire Engagement Ring
(this one is very classic, it’s simple yet elegant.)
Petite Cathedral Solitaire Engagement Ring
(When you look at this one from the side, you’ll see that there is a bit of a gap between the band and the head of the setting. It’s a little thing that makes it look extraordinary.)
14K WHITE GOLD ROPE SOLITAIRE ENGAGEMENT RING
(Or you have one with the twist.)
14K WHITE GOLD ETCHED PROFILE SOLITAIRE ENGAGEMENT RING
(Or one that has an etched profile.)
Thoughts?
I like the first two the best. She doesn’t wear much jewellery so I think she would like the simplicity of the first one. The diamond on the 2nd looks like it is raised a lot higher on the ring and I don’t think she’d like that as much.
Now, what do you think of this diamond:
Blue Nile LD10761974
It’s eye-clean, well cut and will look very bright and brilliant.
I like that a lot! My only fear would be if it would look slightly yellow against white gold? It’s hard for me to tell, you would probably know better.
It won’t look any yellow. We normally recommend a J color for solitaire settings in any metal and it looks great every time.
Oh perfect! I noticed Blue Nile says they have complimentary cleaning/diamond and prong check every 6 months. Do you know how that works? Would we need to mail it to them every 6 months?
I recommend talking to them about it directly, They will give you the whole picture of how their service works.
I’ll do that, thanks. I really appreciate your help. Is there anything else you think I should ask/ look for before making a purchase?
I can’t think of anything right now. They have great policies, so any problem can be solved fairly quickly (we also have experience with their customer service and they do very well.
Thank you so much for your help!
