Hello, I’ve read your website and find it infinitely helpful and can’t thank you enough. I was wondering if you could help me with what is a good table and depth % for a round cut stone?
I’m looking to buy a round cut stone with a budget of roughly 1500£ max. As many carats as possible with an excellent cut is where I’d want the majority of money to go to, with an SI1/2 clarity and G-J colour. Nobody will be looking through magnification and my priority really is an impressive sparkle. Will mount on platinum/white gold most likely, however have always liked gold rings personally so if there is a recommended stone in this budget that would better suit the gold (due to colour perhaps?) then I’m open to the suggestions.
I can’t thank your website enough, and am looking forward to hearing a response. Many thanks.
Just to make sure we’re on the same page, are you going to use a simple solitaire setting? In this case, J color is perfectly sufficient.
I looked around and I like this diamond for you:
Blue Nile LD07281675
I searched in the SI+ range and this one happened to be the best value. It’s superbly cut and will be incredibly brilliant.
What do you think?
Thanks for the info and that diamond looks fantastic, and I am considering it. However it is at the complete top end of my budget and I’m wondering if finding an SI1/2 the brilliance would be comparable?
Many thanks.
If you know the BN inventory, you can see that there are often VS or VVS diamonds that are cheaper than some SIs. As for the SI diamonds, I can only search for the ones with pictures (I wouldn’t recommend getting an SI-VS2 diamond without seeing it photo first). That said, my search is slightly limited.
How about something like this?
Blue Nile LD08811812
Blue Nile LD08013885
They have great specs. I couldn’t find any eye-clean SI diamonds in that range.
Thanks I appreciate the option this now gives me. A couple of questions if you don’t mind;
– is an eye clean diamond one that has no inclusions visible to the naked eye or one where the inclusion is visible yet in a discreet location?
– for maximum brilliance do you need the length and depth of the diamond to be as similar as possible?
– similarly would you want the symmetry to be in the very good – excellent range for best brilliance?
– is a J colour acceptable even in a diamond/white gold setting?
Thank you for your help!
I’m glad they suit you.
1) Exactly so. That’s what eye-cleanliness means.
2) For maximum brilliance, the depth should be close to 61.5% and we don’t recommend going over 62.8%. Regarding the table %, we find that “perfect” light refraction usually occurs with tables around 55-57%.
3) J color is our usual recommendation for solitaires. There are no additional diamonds in the band that might make the difference in colors noticeable. It’ll still look colorless.
I haven’t completely disappeared, just trying to sort things my end!
Would you be able to find me a diamond roughly 1000£ with the same search criteria please? Ideal cut and largest carat being main priority?
Many thanks and kind regards.
Here you go:
Blue Nile LD08802254
Thoughts?
Seems perfect, thank you. As it’s VS1 I presume you would be confident buying it yourself without seeing an image of the diamond?
After reading up on it the fluorescence won’t be noticeable, would you agree?
Thank you.
I’m glad you like it.
Yes, I wouldn’t worry about purchasing a VS1 stone without seeing its picture. As for the fluorescence, it is a bonus on J and lower colors, it makes them look a tad whiter.
Ok thank you, I will most likely be purchasing this in the next few days. I’ll be using this email address too.
Out of interest, am I going to regret buying a J colour diamond do you think? I’m hoping to get maximum brilliance and shine.
Thank you.
Why would you regret it?
It’s not the color what makes the diamond beautiful and brilliant. The most important aspect of a diamond is its cut. And the diamond I sent you is gorgeously cut, it will have a lot of brilliance.
Much appreciated and thank you. I’ll let you know when I’ve made the purchase.
Kind regards.
Thank you!
Have a great week.
Made the purchase – thanks for all your help.
