Q&A: Help Finding a Round Diamond for a White Gold Pave Setting with Around $4,600 Total Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello Diamond Pros,

I have been reading your articles for quite some time now, I must say you are a wealth of knowledge and I cannot thank you enough for everything I’ve learned this far. I’ve learned so much in fact that I think I’ve learned to ask for help when I’m not in my element. I would very much appreciate your help in finding a great diamond for an engagement ring.

I would like to use James Allen as they seem to have a great website with high regards from yourselves. I was looking for something with good value, It will be set in white gold and I think this may be a setting she would love (14K WHITE GOLD PAVE CROSSOVER ENGAGEMENT RING). She has petite hands and fingers with a ring size of 4.5 so I don’t want anything that will overrule her hand, is this a smaller petite setting?

I would like to try and stick to a smaller budget of $6,000 with diamond and setting. I live in Canada so this budget would need to include currency exchange. If there is a better option for me to buy from a dealer north of the border please suggest it.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Can you also tell me what shape of diamond you’re looking for? Also, the budget you mentioned is in USD or CAD? Then I’ll be happy to send you my suggestion.

As for the setting, I’d say that it’s somewhere between a big setting and a very petite one. I think that it will be noticeable on a petite hand but elegant. If you think that your partner will like it, go for it. You can also contact JA directly. They’ll be able to help you with their collection of settings better than me.

Hello! Sorry I forgot to mention the shape. I am looking for a round diamond and the order will be in CAD$.

The other setting I thought was very nice is:
14K WHITE GOLD SINGLE ROW PAVE INFINITY ENGAGEMENT RING BY MARTIN FLYER

I think this one might be a bit better for a petite hand.

Thank you for the information.

Have a look at this diamond:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.81-carat-i-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-3030035?a_aid=dmnd1357

It’s very well cut, eye-clean and going to look colorless (https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/). It also leaves some space in your budget for the setting and taxes.

What do you think?

This diamond is beautiful, it looks like a great find! Well done!

What is your opinion on size? My thought was that .8 would be enough on a smaller finger size 4.5. We are very active and outdoorsy so it shouldn’t get in the way. Do you think there is a need for a larger diamond or will this diamond be a good fit for her small fingers? This would be paired with the second ring (setting) I spoke about the Martin flyer one.

Thank you in advance.

I believe that size is mainly the matter of personal taste. What one thinks is big, the other thinks is too small. In my opinion, 0.80 is a great size for a petite hand. I wouldn’t go for a bigger diamond. But it’s my personal opinion.

Thank you for your opinion, I made the decision yesterday it’s been ordered!

That’s fantastic news! It was my pleasure helping you.

Let me know how you like the ring once it arrives.
