Q&A: Help Finding a 3.00 Ct. Round Diamond for a White Gold Pave Setting

By Mike Fried,

Hello,

How much would a 3 carat diamond run me? I’m looking to upgrade my ring and not spend a mortgage on my diamond ring.

I’m hoping for $20-$30k for a very nice diamond ring that is very good quality to the naked eye and jeweler.

Also, do you do enhanced clarity? I saw one for $17k and it was a 5 carat diamond.

Can you also tell me what shape of diamond you’re looking for?

Also what style of setting (solitaire, halo, pave or other) and metal (platinum/white or yellow gold) your setting is? Different settings suit certain colors better. Then I’ll be happy to send you my suggestion.

As for the enhanced clarity, we don’t recommend purchasing these.

I am looking for a round diamond solitaire that is 14k white gold band or no band doesn’t matter as this ring will be going in my current wedding band.

Thank you for the additional information.

Since you plan on using a solitaire style setting, I suggest searching for a J color diamond. Here’s one with the quality I’d recommend:

It’s very well cut, eye-clean and going to look colorless.

What do you think?

Will it look cloudy or yellow? I was told not to go below an H or I for color.

If there are no additional stones in the setting you have, I’d stick with J. The vast majority of our readers will find a J color stone colorless. So unless you’re extremely color sensitive, or there are other small high colors stones in the setting you have, I wouldn’t worry about that.

This is a tactic of salesmen in order to sell higher grades. If you feel more comfortable with getting an I color stone, I’ll be happy to send you my suggestion. But we might need to go down with the carat weight or increase the budget you mentioned.

I have small stones in the bands but this would be the main diamond on the ring.

Also, what is the story behind enhanced diamonds? You said to stay away from them, correct? Why? I’m trying to learn as much as possible before deciding.

Alright. Here’s what I’d recommend for a setting with additional diamonds:

As for the enhanced diamonds, they never have legitimate certification, so there is no way for us to know the quality.  I’m not saying that you shouldn’t pursue them, but we can’t help with that.

I hope it makes more sense now.

Beautiful!!!

Fantastic! I’m very pleased to hear that you like my suggestion so much.
