Q&A: Help Finding a 0.80 Ct. Oval Diamond for a Yellow Gold Knife Edge Setting

By Mike Fried,

Your website is amazing, thank you for offering such complete advice without the pressure of marketing.

I recently went to a brick and mortar store and it just solidified my thought that I want to buy a diamond ring online and your site has been invaluable in doing research.

That said, the options online, especially at huge sites like James Allen and Blue Nile, are very overwhelming, so I’d love to take advantage of your offer to help sift through them!

I’m looking for an oval diamond for a solitaire setting, and my budget is $3000-3500.

As your site and many others have suggested, I’m most concerned about it having an ideal cut, then its color, and I am definitely willing to sacrifice clarity for affordability as long as it’s eye-clean within the setting.

It will be a yellow gold setting so color is pretty flexible, but after looking around I think I would like to stay above G.

Thanks so much!

For a simple yellow gold setting, you can easily go with an H (GIA) color and still have the colorless impression.

When you were looking around, did you see lots of GIA certified diamonds? Did you really find them yellow?

I didn’t view the certificates at the brick-and-mortar store so I’m not sure about the GIA rating, but the G I saw definitely appeared to have some color, and some of the H’s on the website also do, but I am definitely flexible, not completely set in that preference, especially if it will lead to significant savings!

Thank you. The thing is, GIA’s H color looks colorless because it is the real H color. With other, weaker labs, however, you never know whether the diamond matches the quality claims. When you see a diamond with, let’s say, an IGL/EGL certificate claiming its G, its anywhere from an I to a KL color.

Moreover, the metal color will add a slight hue to any diamond so there is no point in paying extra for the higher grades.

Here’s what I’d recommend:

Blue Nile LD09613598

They are well cut, eye-clean and all of them will look amazing in a YG solitaire setting.

What do you think?

These all seem like great options! I really do like the size of a .8 carat. The Blue Nile one also seems great, pretty much all the same qualities only larger, but Blue Nile doesn’t seem to offer a simple 14k setting. In any case, the first one seems like a great choice and I will likely choose it, thank you for the great suggestions!

You’re welcome. Let me know which one you decide to go with.

I just bought the 80 point one (in a 14kt YG knife edge setting)! Thank you so much for the recommendations, I don’t know that I ever would have been able to sift through all the options and find the right one.

That’s great news! It was my pleasure helping you.
