I’m just wondering what you think of this diamond.
Blue Nile LD08344287
I am looking to get an engagement ring and I found this diamond that seems to be what I am looking for, and the price is right. I’m just curious if this is considered “eye clean” I see some cloudiness on the side but it seems rather faint and I don’t know if it would be visible to the naked eye. It will be a solitaire going in a six prong setting. Is it possible that a prong could cover that up?
Thank you!
To be perfectly honest, I’m not a huge fan of that diamond. Even if it was possible to cover that imperfection with a prong, it would be less brilliant as its cut is off and I don’t like the cloud being listed as the first clarity characteristic.
I’d focus on something cleaner and better cut to maximize brilliance. For a simple solitaire setting, you can easily drop down a few grades and it’ll still look beautiful and brilliant. We don’t think it makes sense to pay a premium for G+ diamonds. The difference in colors isn’t usually recognizable from anything above an H grade. It’s not the color, but the cut what makes the diamond beautiful and brilliant. A very well cut H-color stone will look much better than a poorly cut, cloudy F one.
I’m happy to find some alternatives for you. Can you tell me your ballpark budget for the diamond?
Ok great! Thank you sooooo much! I am looking to get as close to 1 carat as I can without blowing my budget. I would like to keep the price of the diamond around $3000 if I can, hence why I was looking at .9 carats.
I set filters on Blue Nile for ideal cuts and started looking for what would be the most likely to be eye clean diamonds. I found several J colored diamonds that look pretty good but I’m not sure if they would be too yellow. I will be setting it in a white gold or platinum ring. I am also not sure about fluorescence and proportions. I would like to buy online because it seems to be a substantial savings but I don’t want to make a bad purchase.
Any help that you can give me would be much appreciated! Thank you so much!!

I found this one on James Allen:

It’s a little smaller but it looks much clearer to me. What do you think? Is it too yellow?

Or this one…

I’m sorry to keep throwing things at you. Thanks for your help. If I do go with one of these from James Allen please tell me what to do to make sure you get your commission.
You are right, for a simple solitaire setting, J color is perfectly fine. There no additional diamonds in the band that might make the difference in colors noticeable.
I love the J-color diamond from JA you sent me. It’s eye-clean, very well cut and will make a beautiful ring. The other one is a no-go, it’s cut too deep and will be less brilliant.
Ok, thank you. Unfortunately that one sold. What % depth is ideal?

I found this one that seems to have better proportions and it looks clean.

It’s possible I sent you the wrong link on the last one. I apologize if I did. This is the one I meant to send.
Ideally, the depth should be close to 61.5% and we don’t recommend going over 62.8%.
That J-SI2 looks good, but there is always a reason why the diamond is an SI2, even if you can’t see it. In this case, the feather might negatively affect the integrity of the stone. You’d better ask JA if they can get it inspected by their gemologists.
Ok thank you. I went ahead and ordered it because about 3 other diamonds sold before I could purchase them. What do you mean by it could affect the integrity of the stone? Do you mean it could make it weak or just could affect the look? If it comes in and does not look right I can always return it?
Thank you again for all of your help. Two weeks ago I didn’t really know anything about diamonds or rings. Now I feel like a regular gemologist talking about eye clean cut and clarity, hahahah!! Ok, maybe not for real but it has definitely been an educational experience to say the least. Your articles are very helpful and so has your advice.
Thank you for letting me know about ordering it. Sometimes the feathers might increase the risk of chipping so it’s always a good idea to have a gemologist look at the diamond. Just ask them if it’s still possible or if they have already mounted the stones.
You are right, if you don’t like the way it looks, you can always return it. And I’m glad I could make this process easier on you.
