Hi there,
I am looking to buy loose diamonds to be made into a ring here in the UK. I have read through your excellent posts but need a hand as I am thinking of having a central round stone with two pear shaped stones either side. As I am buying them loose myself I will need to know what size to buy for the pear shaped stones either side of the main stone in a proportion which looks good. Is there a good rule of thumb here? If useful I am looking to spend GBP 10,000 on the whole ring so if you have a ballpark on what size stones I should be looking at that would be great!
Thanks.
Usually, the ratio is 1:4 or 1:2. So you might be able to get ~1.20ct center stone and two ~0.60ct side pears.

Check them out and let me know what you think.
The central stone looks great – do you think though that it is worth spending the extra money to get an ideal cut though? I have been told that there is very little difference between ideal and excellent but wanted to check with you. I have also been told about a cut called hearts and arrows (I think?) is that something worth exploring?
Regarding the pear shaped stones I see the cut on both is lower down the scale (good and very good) – is that not going to make them look very dull in comparison to the central stone?
Thanks.
GIA’s highest cut grade is called “Excellent”. AGS’ is called “Ideal”. These two grades are pretty much identical. Now, AGS’ second highest grade is called “Excellent” (here is where the confusion comes from). We always recommend picking only the highest cut grades, so either GIA Ex or AGS Ideal is fine.
GIA doesn’t give cut grades to any other shape than a round. Those marks are subjective notes from Blue Nile. The diamonds are well cut and they will look great. I chose two that match so one doesn’t look bigger than the other, etc..
Don’t focus on any “special cuts.” You would pay premium for nothing really special.
Thanks for that, these look good I think. I read on your site to check where any inclusions are on the stone (in the middle or at the side etc). I see this is VS2 – do you have any further detail about where the inclusions are?
Thanks.
There is a clarity plot in the certificate where you can see the location of inclusions. But they all are so tiny, they won’t be seen with the naked eye.
So there has been a bit of a change of plan! I asked one of her friends who showed me a ring she had been told to show me should I ever ask! Unfortunately for me the ring in question has a 3.1 carat diamond on it…. which is out of my price range! But I think the style could look nice with a smaller stone as well. Here is a picture of it:
That is also her wedding ring next to it.
So essentially now I’m looking to get close to 2 carats if I can, it will be on a thin gold or rose gold band so colour I imagine around the HIJ region? Still with cut as ideal as possible and still with a budget of around £10,000 – might you be able to help? Sorry for the change of heart!
Thanks.
I found a 1.90ct diamond that’s under 10k and according to the clarity plot in the cert, there are no significant inclusions. But to be sure, ask BN for the actual photo:

Blue Nile sent me the below photo. It looks like on the right hand side there are fairly significant inclusions? Is this something that could be hidden with a well placed claw or do you think this is too much of an issue?
Thanks.
It can be covered with a prong with no problem. I like the diamond a lot.
