I’m considering buying a ring from Blue Nile. Do you have a coupon code?
Thanks.
Hi, happy to help [contact us for your own unique coupon code].
I’m also happy to help you select a diamond or review the one you are already considering to make sure there are no issues.
Thanks for the offer and I will take you up on it. What is the best way to reach you?
You’re welcome.
Just shoot me an email if you find anything you want me to comment on.
Hi, I have some general questions…
1) Do you recommend BlueNile, that is, if you were me, would you buy from them. If not, what/who do you recommend?
2) Do certification matter? I’ve done some reading online and most say only trust GIA. Your opinion?
3) How much should I spend on the setting? Is there any general rule of thumb, say, as a percentage of the total ring?
4) What style, princess/round/emerald cut etc. provides the best brilliance? best bang for the buck.
5) Should I care about luminescence?
6) If you don’t mind giving me your recommendation, I intend to spend about $20k.
1) I do. Blue Nile is a reputable company and we recommend it to our readers often. Sometimes you can find a great value there (their prices have dropped to the point where you can often find a VVS diamond that is a better value than an eye-clean SI elsewhere).
Additionally, Mike and Annie visited their operations a couple of months ago and got to see their jewelry department and processing facilities firsthand. They are very happy with the work they do there.
2) It most certainly does. We merely recommend purchasing diamonds certified by GIA or AGS only. That’s what ensures that the diamond you are getting actually matches the quality claims. https://www.diamonds.pro/education/diamond-certification/
3) If brilliance is what you care about the most, I’d recommend getting a round diamond. It’s the most brilliant of all the diamond shapes.
4) Did you mean fluorescence? The thing about fluorescence is that it can either be a bonus (it whitens the appearance of a diamond) or a negative (it makes the diamonds look dull and milky). For DEFG diamond you should get only faint or none fluorescence, for HI medium is ok as well, and for J and lower color you can go with medium and strong fluorescence – it’ll help the diamond look whiter.
I’d be happy to make some recommendations for you, but I need a little more info.
What style setting (solitaire, pave/side stones/halo) and metal (yellow/white gold, platinum) do you want to use? This may affect the colors that I recommend for the center diamond (as we explain in our post on color).
I’d like a solitaire. As far as metal, I like platinum/white gold, but can one tell the difference/pros/cons? Or only the price is different? My priority is how it pairs with the diamond – a metal/setting that will make it appear more brilliant.
By the way, I don’t know if this helps, but her ring size is 4. Tiny fingers. Hope a 2 carat or somewhere in that ballpark is adequate.
You suggested a round diamond as the shape that will give the most brilliance. She’s up for a shape that’s a little more unique. What’s another shape that is comparable to round in brilliance?
Thank you for the info.
For metal, we always recommend white gold over platinum because of the huge disparity in upfront costs: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/platinum-vs-gold/. Both metals require upkeep every few years. WG needs to be dipped to retain its color and luster while PT needs to be cleaned and polished because it gets scratched and duller over time. So in the end, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run. And I’d recommend 14k white gold. It’s cheaper and more durable than 18k.
I looked around and I love these options for you:
Blue Nile LD04296918
Blue Nile LD07920585
Blue Nile LD07792693
These diamonds are well cut and any of them will be very brilliant.
What do you think?
Your suggestions are fantastic! I’m waiting for my credit card to arrive in a few days then I will purchase. I’m going to go with the 2.5 carat princess cut diamond:
Blue Nile LD07920585
Quick question, the code you provided, what percentage is applied during checkout?
I will heed your advice and go with the 14k white gold for the metal.
Thanks.
I’m glad you like it.
The code gives you $100 off of your order. According to Blue Nile, this is the best coupon code they offer at the moment.
I hope you’ll love the ring when you receive it. If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.
Quick question, so if I search using the criteria of the diamond that you had selected for me, between 2.4 to 2.6 carat, any shape, Very Good Cut/H/VVS2, there is no other diamond that’s within the ballpark of this one. If fact, in terms of price per carat, no one is even close. Can you tell me why that is? I understand you’re an expert and you’ve found a great bargain for me, but all the other comparable diamonds are $8k+ per carat.
Just curious why that is. Seems this stone is an outlier.
I know what you mean. In fact, I was surprised myself when I found it.
I have no idea why they’re priced this way. It happens more often than you think. The prices always depend on the particular supplier, all aspects of the stone, fluorescence, angles and proportions, types and location of inclusions, etc.
I had my colleagues double check the diamond and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. It looks like you got yourself an amazing value.
Thanks for the quick response. I made your suggested purchase already of the Blue Nile LD07920585. I want to thank you, again. Can’t wait to see this ring when it arrives.
That’s great news!
I’m glad I could help you decide on the diamond. Let me know how it looks when it arrives!
