Q&A: Help Finding a 1 Ct. Round Diamond for a Tapered Solitaire Setting

By Mike Fried,

I am thinking of buying a diamond for my partner to end up getting it set in a white gold engagement ring. My budget for this diamond is around 4k. What could I get? I have seen a K diamond for sale at 4k, it’s a 1.07 ct. but I’m unsure. This comes with a recent evaluation – value of $10,900. I know that’s insurance value only.

Have you seen a K diamond in person? These stones usually appear with a yellow tint and we recommend them for yellow gold solitaire settings only.

Also, was the diamond certified (ideally GIA/AGS)? If so, can you send me its report number so I can look it up online and see more specs?

Lastly, are you referring to a round cut diamond?

I’m looking for a diamond for a white gold setting. $4-5k, round diamond. Where can I find it?

What about this diamond?
Blue Nile LD07636078

It’s well cut and will look very bright and brilliant. You can also ask them to send you the actual photo so you know it’s eye-clean.

What do you think?

Ok, now you have my attention. It’s pretty much exactly what I’m after. Is this Australian $$$? I hope so. I will do business with you. I will need a week or two. I’m sure there’s more where this one came from.

Unfortunately, it was not in AUD. I didn’t notice that you were from Australia so the price was in USD. This changes the whole situation.

What style setting are you going to use? A solitaire, pave/side stones or halo?

Ok, well that changes it a bit for me. But maybe I can still do it. The style I’m interested in is classic white gold 18 carat. Thanks!

Here is the cheapest eye-clean 1ct diamond I could find:
Blue Nile LD07610967

With a classic solitaire setting, the total will be around 5,5k AUD:
Blue Nile Classic Four Claw Engagement Ring

I chose a 14K gold as it’s cheaper and more durable than 18K. Let me know what you think.

Hello again. I am still interested in this ring. The size I want is 49.5 mm. I think it’s around Australian size J. Also a wedding band to suit.

……

Also I want this in 6 claw. Thanks!

Here is a setting with 6 prongs:

And here is an alternative to the diamond I already sent to you:

Hi again, here is an example of the ring i am interested in. 5000 AUD budget.

……

Sorry extra info. 14k white gold with the best diamond I can get. 6 claws, ring tapered at diamond as in pics. I’m not sure what you call this style.

I am about to purchase with Blue Nile. So i hope you get your commission.

Thanks for letting me know. Did you find something on your own?

Yes.

Great. I hope you like it when you receive it.
Let me know how it looks.

This is it. It’s a simple ring with a .91 ct diamond.

Looks good. Do you want to send me the link to the diamond so I can take a look and make sure it’s well cut?

You can’t see it once it’s sold. I tried that. But here’s the screen shot of the details.

I found it on the BN website. I like that diamond. It was a great choice.

Picked it myself after looking for many months. With some help from you. Thank you!
Cheers.

P.S. I have never bought a diamond before so I guess I got a bit lucky… Thx again!

I’m pretty sure you’ll love it.
