I am preparing to buy an engagement ring and I have an idea of what I am looking for. Hoping you can help me a bit further. I like the idea of building my own (choosing the setting and diamond separately).
Here is where I am currently:
Setting:
I am looking for a platinum setting similar to the 2 links below. Obviously much prefer the Blue Nile price tag. I want the inter-looping diamonds on the band that add to the natural beauty of the main setting but not eat it up like some of the bigger rings.

Diamond:
I am looking for a diamond that is just about 1 carat but visual perfect to the naked eye. It does not have to be so perfect under magnification but I want a quality diamond that she and her friends will think is perfect under normal observation.
Price:
Based on what I have seen on various sites for what I am looking for I am thinking between $5000-$7500.
Hopefully you can give me some tips to get the best value for what I am looking for.
I’d be happy to make some recommendations for you, but I need a little more info.
What shape diamond are you looking for?
Is $5000-$7500 your budget for the whole ring or just for the center diamond?
Thanks for the quick response. Guess I could have been a bit more descriptive. I am looking to spend between $5000 – $7500 for the whole ring including the diamond. Of course I would prefer to pay less to achieve my goals but I would feel a bit uneasy spending money on the 8000s since this will attack a fair portion of my savings account.
I am looking for a stunning traditional round diamond that will be free from any noticeable imperfections when observed using the naked eye (and maybe a little magnification. My girlfriend doesn’t like lots of jewelry so I think 1 carat would be perfect and I will spend a bit more to make sure it is a really nice diamond rather than a lesser quality bigger diamond.
Thanks a bunch for this service. I didn’t want to walk into a jewelry store with the person helping me having a goal of getting me to spend my limits when I may not have to.
Great, thank you for the additional info. You can definitely get a good quality diamond for your budget and within the carat weight you want.
These diamonds would be my recommendation:

They are fantastically cut and either of them will be very brilliant.

If I may, I would recommend changing the PT setting to a WG one. The reason is the huge disparity in upfront costs. As our article says, the WG has to be dipped every few years and the platinum needs to be polished as well because it scratches. So ultimately, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run.
Let me know your thoughts.
I think I read somewhere that the PT is significantly more robust the WG. What is your experience with this? I like the cost savings on the WG if there will be no noticeable difference in the long run.
Since the price of the setting is significantly more reasonable at Blue Nile, I think I will stick with them. I think the Blue Nile diamond specs look great but you definitely know better than I do.
I intend on making this purchase at the end of next week. If the diamond is no longer in stock I will send you another email for an updated diamond.
I don’t think PT would be more robust. But we are not jewelers, so you’d better ask about it someone who could tell you more, like BN custom service or a local jeweler.
Feel free to get back in touch if there’s anything else I can help with.
I was hoping you could tell me the difference between the I rated color diamond you recommended and an H or even G. Wondering if you think that she wont be able to see any color in an H rated diamond.
In a pave setting, the difference won’t be noticeable. An I color diamond will still appear colorless. That said, there’s no reason to go higher in color and get the same look for the naked eye with a significant price difference.
I know it has been a few weeks, however, this morning I finally purchased the Blue Nile diamond you recommended. I used this email for the purchase. Thank you so much for the help choosing the perfect diamond.
Thanks!
That’s great news! Thank you for letting me know.
I hope you love it when you receive it. If you could let me know how it looks when it arrives, I’d appreciate it.
Have a great day!
Everything went great and the ring looks fantastic. Thanks for helping me select the diamond. I attached a picture of the end product on my fiancee’s finger.
Wow, it looks amazing! Thank you for sending the picture over. I’m happy to hear that you love the diamond, it’s been a pleasure helping you.
