Looking for a pair of diamond stud earings; simple setting in white gold or platinum.
1. do you recommend white gold or platinum for the setting?
2. what price range would you expect for earings that are:
a. 1 cwt total weight
b. 1.5 cwt total weight
c. 2 cwt total weight ( 1 cwt each earing)
Thanks.
1. As for the metal, we recommend WG over PT. The reason is the huge disparity in upfront costs. As our article says, the WG has to be dipped every few years and the platinum needs to be polished as well because it scratches. So ultimately, platinum costs you more in the beginning and doesn’t end up saving you any money in the long run.
2. Here are some options of preset earrings. That would be the price range.
a. Blue Nile Diamond Stud Earrings 1 ct. tw.
b. Blue Nile Diamond Stud Earrings 1 1/2 ct. tw.
c. Blue Nile Diamond Stud Earrings 2 ct. tw.
If you tell me which size is your favorite, I’ll be happy to find a matched pair of diamonds for you, too.
I would focus on the 1.5 ctw and I’m fine w/ white gold.
Would you also check on diamond hoops (obviously that is a lower price point) but I may want to buy those for one of my daughters as well.
Will probably make the purchase this weekend. BTW, the prices you sent on these samples will on the high side form other research I have done-even with local retailers here.
Sure, here are some examples of the hoops:
Blue Nile Colin Cowie Diamond Hoop Earrings
Blue Nile Classic Diamond Hoop Earrings 1/2 ct. tw.
Blue Nile Classic Diamond Hoop Earrings 3/4 ct. tw.
Blue Nile Classic Diamond Hoop Earrings 1 ct. tw.
Here’s a matched pair for the studs:
Blue Nile LD07725989
Blue Nile LD07872549
They are both very well cut, will appear colorless in the studs and have legitimate GIA certificates.
Did the diamond studs you were offered have a legit cert as well (GIA or AGS)? If so, can you send them (or their number) to me? Then I’ll be happy to comment on them, too.
Thanks. Why are you only quoting from Blue Nile?
For studs, we have found Blue Nile to be the best bang for your buck. Their setting quality and service are top notch (along with James Allen, Ritani etc) and their prices are definitely lower. The one advantage JA (for example) would have with diamonds (their video technology that helps looking at inclusions) doesn’t really make up for the price difference when it comes to studs (as we state in our diamond studs article, clarity isn’t as important for studs).
If you like I can show you some alternatives from other sites, but they will be more expensive.
