Hello,
I’m looking for an engagement ring and I have been going to a private jeweler (not Zales or Jared) who is offering me a 1.09 carat diamond J SI1 for $5000. I’m not sure what kind of deal I am getting.
Does the diamond come with a certificate? Can you send it to me or give me its number? After seeing it and seeing the proportions of the diamond, I can give you a more informed answer and help you more.
Thank you.
I looked at it and I wouldn’t recommend that diamond. The cut is quite poor on it. The depth of 64.2% is too high and can cause the diamond to look smaller and less brilliant: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/carat-weight.
Ideally, the depth should be close to 61% and we don’t recommend going over 62.8%.
I wouldn’t sacrifice on cut, it is enormously important. This is what makes the diamond beautiful and sparkly (fire and brilliance are the terms we use). The more brilliance there is, the more unique the diamond will look.
Also, without seeing the diamond in person (or a high quality photo of it), there’s no way for me to know if it’s eye-clean. However, I’m slightly concerned about the inclusions listed in the certificate.
If you want, I might be able to find a better option for you online. I just need to know what type of a setting and metal you are using for the ring. This way you can make sure you are getting the best value possible (depending on the setting style, we select certain color grades). Just let me know.
Yes, that would be great. For setting and metal it would be this in 18kt gold:

Thank you.
Thanks again. The setting you picked is beautiful. I’d recommend going a little higher in color to make sure there won’t be any yellowness in it. J color would be too low for a pave. I+ would be where I’d go and it’ll look fantastic.
Have a look at this option:

The cut on the diamond is fantastic. The clarity plot in the report looks good to me, but I’d still recommend asking for a real photo of the diamond, just to make sure it’s eye-clean.
Let me know your thoughts.
That’s a great diamond, it looks very nice. It’s a bit pricy though. What if I would like to have the price dropped by a thousand?
All right.
Here you go:

The proportions look great on the diamond. Make sure you ask for a photo of it. If it’s eye-clean, you got yourself a great diamond.
It says the diamond has been sold. I guess I took too long 🙁 Is there anything else you would recommend?
No worries. Check out these suitable alternatives:

The specs are good on them, so make sure you ask for photos.
