Q&A: Help Choosing a Round Diamond for a Rose Gold Ring Within a $4,000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Interested in Blue Nile diamond.

I’d be happy to make some recommendations for you, but I need a little more info.

What shape diamond are you looking for?

What style setting (solitaire, pave/side stones/halo) and metal (yellow/white gold, platinum) do you want to use? This may affect the colors that I recommend for the center diamond (as we explain in our post on color).

Can you give me your ballpark figure of what you’re planning to spend? Then I’ll be able to help you more.

Very interested. Want a round 1ct diamond, very good cut on a rose gold solitaire with some small side diamonds. Have attached a copy of a ring I was looking at from Blue Nile, just slightly out of my price range.

Very important to have a blemish-free diamond and a strong setting which won’t lose its diamonds (have seen people complaining about this on Blue Nile Facebook).

Looking to spend 5,000 Australian dollars. Size 7.

Great, thank you for the additional info.

For a round brilliant I wouldn’t settle for anything less than an EX (Ideal) cut as the cut is what makes the diamond brilliant and beautiful. Color-wise, you can go with I+ and it’ll look beautiful and colorless.

I like this combination for you:
Blue Nile Petite Diamond Engagement Ring
Blue Nile LD07996689

This diamond is fantastically cut, eye-clean and will be very brilliant in that setting.

What do you think?

Looks like a perfect diamond. Only issue is that it’s not quite 1ct & I’m worried that would leave her unimpressed.

……

Just had a rethink about the setting after looking at some in real life and I think I prefer the attached.

Blue Nile Petite Micropavé Diamond Engagement Ring
Blue Nile LD08344287

What do you think about this .9 carat round diamond colour F I have chosen? And does buying this from you offer any discount on price?

Personally, I think a beautiful and brilliant 0.80ct diamond is much more impressive than a poorly cut dull-looking bigger stone with inclusions. The one you picked out seems to be very cloudy and also, its cut is off. It will lose a lot of its brilliance.

Here’s a suggestion. How about you go with a different type of setting, no additional diamonds in the band, and this way you can drop down in color to a J and get a larger diamond?

Blue Nile Petite Solitaire Engagement Ring
Blue Nile LD08098689

This one has great specs.

Thoughts?

I’m just a little confused, I thought F was a better colour than J? What do you mean by cloudy?

And is it possible to request a 360 of the diamond you are suggesting? Just a bit wary of picking a stone which doesn’t have a picture.

……

I read up a little more on colour and clarity. I see where your coming from about a brilliant smaller stone is better than a dull, poorly cut 1ct.

How do you feel about the attached? It is I colour, 0.8 ct, ideal cut, IF clarity.

With that band it is only just over $5000AUD.

Thank you. I was just about to answer and then I’ve noticed your follow-up email.

Can you send me a link to the I-color diamond again? There seems to be no attachment to this email.

It’s cut too deep and will lose some of its brilliance. The depth should be close to 61.5% and we don’t recommend going over 62.8%.

Okay,

So do you still think the best value-for-money diamond out there which is suited to this setting (Blue Nile Petite Micropavé Diamond Engagement Ring) is:

Blue Nile LD08098689

So that would be about .99ct total for $930 + $3985 = $4,915. I think I would be pretty happy with that.

Out of curiosity though, would you recommend the exact same diamond for the halo setting (Blue Nile Classic Halo Diamond Engagement Ring)?

If not, could you recommend something else that would suit the setting for between $4500AUD and $5,500 total?

The reason I’m asking about the halo is because I looked at some rings in person here in Sydney and the rose gold halo combination looks amazing in real life. But for the same price in Sydney I could only get a 1/2ct ring so would rather buy off Blue Nile for a bigger rock!

If you can give me the best diamond recommendation for the petite mircopave setting (<$5000 total), and the best diamond recommendation for the rose gold halo (<$5500 total) then I will compare the two and place an order.

Think we are getting really close. Your help has been great.

I wouldn’t put a J-color diamond in a pave setting, it might have a warmish tinge. I’d go with my original I-color suggestion:
Blue Nile LD07996689

This would be my recommendation for a halo setting:
Blue Nile LD08184083

It has great specs.

Thoughts?

Really appreciate your efforts to stay under my budget (a lot of jewellers don’t!) but do you think we could look at diamonds just a little bit closer to my limits?

With the pave setting I could spend another $500 for something a little bigger. With the halo I’m happy to go $1000 more than the diamond suggested.

Hoping to go as close to a ct total as possible with each setting, so for the pave maybe a diamond between .85-.91? And the halo, a diamond around .8ct.

Also your suggested pave stone has been sold and is no longer available.

You’re welcome, I’m glad I can help.

This diamond has great specs, but you should ask for its picture to see where the crystal is located.

Blue Nile LD08591608
This one is basically the same size as a 0.80ct diamond.

Thoughts?

Great,

I am leaning towards the halo I think. Like the specs of the diamond you have suggested and good price for me. I have requested a photo which I can share with you once it is provided, and from there, I will look to place an order.

Your website mentions possible discount codes for Blue Nile, are there any available for this order out of curiosity?

Sure, do share the picture with me.

Thank you for the pictures. Both of the diamonds look great and are perfectly eye-clean.

Fantastic.

I think I will be proceeding with the purchase of the .77ct with the rose gold halo.
