Hi there, I’m looking for a diamond for a rose gold bezel set engagement ring similar to this one.
I’ve read your articles and I think I should be looking for an Excellent or Ideal cut, with the lowest clarity rating that still looks clean to the naked eye.
With the bezel set engagement ring, any imperfections on the outside perimeter of the diamond should be covered by the setting, so I should be able to go with an SI1 or an SI2 to save a bit of money.
My question is with regard to colour. You say that for a yellow gold ring, some of the colour is absorbed into the diamond, so anything higher than K is going to look slighly yellowish anyway. I’m wondering if the same rule applies to rose gold? Or if the diamond would look slightly pink in the setting above?
You did a great job reading our articles. You’re right, for a round brilliant I wouldn’t settle for anything less than an EX (Ideal) cut as the cut is what makes the diamond brilliant and beautiful.
Color wise, J color would be what I’d go with to be on the safe side. K color is what we recommend for a yellow gold solitaire only.
I’d be happy to make some recommendations to you. Can you tell me your ballpark budget for the diamond? Then I’ll be able to help you more.
Thanks so much for taking the time to write me back. I was hoping to spend around $5,000 US for the diamond and the setting, so if we assume $600 to $800 for the setting, that leaves around $4,200 to $4,400 for the diamond. I would also consider purchasing a loose diamond and having it set by a local jeweler. I think if I was going that route though, I would not want to spend more than $4,000 for the diamond.
Obviously, I’m looking for the biggest diamond I can find that will be clean to the naked eye and within my budget. I looked at some of the Brian Gavin Blue diamonds, because I like the idea of a diamond with some fluorescence, but the thought that it could be cloudy or “milky” sort of scares me.
Hopefully this helps give you an idea of what I’m looking for. If you have any other questions for me, please let me know.
…
Just one other question for you. I was looking on Brian Gavin’s website, and came across a 1.33 ct. IGI certified diamond with excellent cut, SI2 clarity and I Colour for $3,439.

I also came across a 1.26 ct GIA certified diamond with excellent cut, SI2 clarity and I colour for $4,999.

Just wondering if you can tell me why the smaller diamond would be worth so much more? Is it because of the IGI certificate as opposed to the GIA certificate? Or is there something else I’m not seeing?
Thanks for the additional info.
Brian Gavin is an excellent choice. He is known as one of the worlds experts when it comes to perfectly cut diamonds. BGD’s Signature diamonds are truly fantastic. They are all incredibly brilliant.
‘Brian Gavin Blue’ is a selection of diamonds with blue fluorescence (and thus cheaper), however, each diamond was handpicked and inspected by them to make sure fluorescence has no negative effect whatsoever. That’s why we believe that diamonds from this line offer a great value. You get the added brilliance of the BGD perfectly cut diamonds for a lower price.
I took a look at the links and those diamonds you picked are from their virtual inventory. We don’t recommend those because BGD doesn’t have access to those diamonds directly.
This would be my recommendation instead:

These are the largest diamonds I was able to find on BG within your budget. They are superbly cut, eye-clean and either of them will be extremely brilliant in that setting you have in mind.
