Q&A: Help Choosing a Pear Shaped Diamond with Around $1,000 Budget

By Mike Fried,

I recently purchased this diamond:
Blue Nile LD08431086

But it’s a bit hazy in the lower half of the pear (pointed part) and I’m slightly disappointed with its sparkle, so I have inquired about exchanging the stone for this one:
Blue Nile LD08732886

This one has a higher clarity grade but medium fluorescence. Can you give me advice on which seems like the better option? Many thanks in advance

I’m not sure why the diamond you purchased doesn’t look brilliant to you. I don’t see any reason for that. However, the new one isn’t a better choice. It’s possible that the medium fluorescence wouldn’t cause any harm, but it usually makes G+ diamonds hazy.

I searched for an alternative, but can’t find anything around 1k that would be comparable in size. Would you be happy with a smaller diamond as well?

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated. Maybe I am just not used to the light return from fancy shapes and so this is why it doesn’t look as sparkly as I would have hoped. I will stick with the stone I have as I think it was a reasonable price (I am in the UK where choice is limited, particularly in terms of fancy shaped stones).

Kind regards.

Try having it cleaned. I know that you just purchased it, but it might help a little.

Thanks, I will try this, I’m currently looking at alternatives which are a smaller carat weight but very similar proportions on Blue Bile.

Best wishes.

Feel free to send me anything you want me to take a look at.

I found this 0.51ct:
Blue Nile LD08431048

Thanks for sending that on, I like the higher L/W ratios. I’ve found this one: Blue Nile LD08786845

I asked for additional info and have been told it has no bow tie. I have also asked for a picture. Do you think this looks ok? I’m not sure I know what the key factors affecting sparkle of pear diamonds are. I bought by the numbers but it’s tough with fancy stones. Where I live there are lots of jewelers but very few pears!

Thanks for your help!

The specs look very nice. Let’s wait for the picture to see the bow tie and the feather. It looks promising so far.

The picture of the diamond I had mentioned before is below, really I was wanting this to check the shape. The picture isn’t the best quality but as it’s VS1 I’m hoping it’s clear. If you have any thoughts on this I would value your opinion.

Kind regards.

The bow tie isn’t even obvious on it. It looks great. I’d give it a go.

Just to say I have now received my ring back with the diamond discussed, it is perfect and a huge improvement on the first one in terms of brilliance and sparkle!

Best wishes.

That’s wonderful! I’m glad that you like it so much.

All the best.
