Q&A: Help Choosing a Classic Tiffany Style Solitaire Ring With a $10k Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hello! It’s been very useful reading your review. We are looking for and engagement ring around US10.000 and the ideal think would be round cut, VS1 to SI1 and color between G and J.

I would really appreciate any advice and thoughts.
Thank you very much!

Can you also tell me what style of setting (solitaire, halo, pave or other) and metal (platinum/white or yellow gold) you’re looking for? Different settings suit certain colors better. Then I’ll be happy to send you my suggestion.
https://www.diamonds.pro/education/color/.

Hello!!! Thanks for getting back to me. This whole process of picking the right ring is a little difficult but I’m sure with your help we will be able to find the one.

Actually I’m (as the one who’s going to wear it) really sure about what I want. I’m sending you the picture. I love the classic six prone Tiffany setting, but we don’t want to make a mistake buying something that does not worth it.

Our budget is around US13.000 for the ring and the wedding bands.
Of course I want a beautiful, sparkling diamond, I’ve been researching and I think something like 1 carat, VVS1 to VS2, G, H or I color and excellent to ideal cut would be perfect.

I hope we can work through this together. Thanks so much!

……

Hello again. I forgot to tell you that I already have some stuff in the cart on Blue Nile and James Allen. Thanks.

Thank you for sending the pictures.

Have a look at this diamond I found for you:
www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.213-i-vs2-round-diamond-ags-104091555003?a_aid=y

It’s beautifully cut and going to look colorless in the style of setting you like.

Feel free to send me the diamonds you found on JA and BN. I’l be happy to comment on them, too.

Thanks for the research you did. It’s indeed an astonishing diamond but the thing I don’t like about that site is that they don’t have the setting I like. On the other hand I don’t know if that price would allow us to stay in our 13.000 budget for the whole set (ring and 2 bands) because also I want and infinity band.

I’m sending you the links of the diamonds I found.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for your feedback.

The issue with the stone from BN is its Very Good cut. It’s too deep which means that it’s going to return light with lack of brilliance. That’s why I don’t recommend purchasing it.

Unfortunately I can’t open your account on James Allen. Can you send me a separate link with the diamond? Or its SKU number with its price? Then I’ll be happy to comment on it.

I’m having some issues with searching on Blue Nile at the moment. I’ll be happy to send you my suggestion from their site in my next email.

Thank you very much again. See it’s a difficult process for someone who doesn’t have your knowledge.

I hope you can open this link of the JA diamond:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.00-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-2430895?a_aid=dmnd1357

Also if we can select a diamond I would really appreciate your help selecting the perfect setting for it. Thanks!

This diamond from JA is beautiful. It’s very well cut and the overall specifications are great. I also found this diamond for you:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.00-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2416103?a_aid=dmnd1357

It has very similar specifications. It’s going to return light with a lot of brilliance and fire and it’s significantly less expensive.

As for the settings, I believe that it’s mainly the matter of your personal taste. Did you check their collection of settings?
www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/?a_aid=dmnd1357

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!!! I love both diamonds. Do you think there is no a significant difference between them? Or if you have to choose you would prefer one over the other? I’m sorry to bother you with so many questions.

Also I would like to know if there is any diamond on Blue Nile that you would recommend. Thanks again.

……

Hello!!! Another question. I’ve done some research about JA and the reviews on Yelp are very bad and honestly that is not encouraging us to keep going with them. What do you honestly think? Thank you again!

We are aware of the bad reviews. At the same time, people can write mean and bad things. We and our readers have had great experiences with James Allen. They always provided great services and keep the dates they promise. I wouldn’t worry about purchasing from them.

As for the stones, I prefer the one I sent you as I don’t see a reason in paying extra without getting an additional benefit.

Here’s also a suggestion from Blue Nile:
Blue Nile LD08110434

If you feel more comfortable with purchasing from Blue Nile, this is a perfect option.

Let me know what you decide.

Thanks again. I feel a little relieved about JA but still with some doubts. My concern with them is not much about the time or dates but about the materials they use for the settings and also the diamonds they put on the wedding band (cuz I want and infinite band). I want something that has similar qualities as the ring and on top of that I don’t want the stones on the wedding band to come off the band. Those were other nonconformities people have with them.

I’m really sorry to bother you with all this questions but I really want to have a nice experience buying this important pieces. Thanks again!

I understand your concerns. At the same time, we’ve had great experiences with them and the quality of their products. I remember that our readers happened to complain about delivery times (rarely but it happened), but not about the quality of their rings. But if you feel more comfortable with BN, go with them.

Hello, I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you but we have had some family issues that took my attention apart from the ring search.

I don’t want you to think that I was wasting your time. I respect so much your help and the effort you put in this process. Unfortunately I lost the opportunity with the nice diamond you have found for me, it’s sold already. But I have started the search again and found this stuff in which I would really like your feedback.
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.15-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1965593?a_aid=dmnd1357

www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.00-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2455949?a_aid=dmnd1357

And if is possible could you suggest any other almost perfect diamond for me around the same price? I’m so sorry again for the inconvenience.

I understand and hope that everything is alright with you and your family. I’m happy to help you with the search again.

The main issue with the stones you found is their IGI certification (https://www.diamonds.pro/education/igi/). You can search for stones with either GIA or AGS cert instead.

Have a look at this diamond:
Blue Nile LD08272903

Or this one:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.01-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2436731?a_aid=dmnd1357

Let me know which one is your favorite.

Thank you very much. I can not tell you how important is your help for me in this difficult moment.

I really like the one you send me from JA and I feel confident with them since you tell you have had a good experience, but also I want to ask you which one would you choose between the one you suggested and this one that I already had sent you previously:
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.00-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-2430895?a_aid=dmnd1357

Do you think there are big differences in qualities or is just the price. Also could you suggest a nice eternity band with excellent quality around US3000. (That could be either BN or JA). I think we are ready to get our pieces.

Thank you so much again!

My pleasure helping you.

The stone you found is beautiful and it does have great overall specs. I just don’t see a reason in paying extra without getting any additional benefit.

The diamond from JA I found is slightly bigger in measurements, that’s why I like it more.

I like the collection of eternity rings on Blue Nile more. Have a look at the rings:
Blue Nile Women’s Wedding Rings

And let me know which one is your favorite.

Thanks!!! If you think the diamond you found is going to reflect beautiful light and everything, then I’m going to pick that one.

Also I found I nice band on Blue Nile. Thank you so much again. I’ll let you know when I’ve finished the buying.
Have a great day.

……

Hello again!!! Just a final question about those two stones. What do you think about them? Anything good?

I’m a little worried about the clarity of the other one you send me, but I’ll follow you if you think is the best option.
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.01-carat-i-color-vvs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2530656?a_aid=dmnd1357

Thanks again!

The issue with the stones you found is their strong fluorescence. It can cause a hazy look on I+ color grades: https://www.diamonds.pro/education/fluorescence/. That’s why I’d stick with my suggestion. I don’t think there’s need to worry about the clarity.

I’m happy to hear that you found a nice band on Blue Nile, too.

Let me know what you finally decide.

Hello. I just want to thank you for all your help and good advice through all this process.

We finally made the purchase and I hope we’ll be truly happy and pleased when we receive the ring. I’m not sure what information do you need in order to get the commission. The email we used was this one. Hope that is what you need.

Thanks again for all your help!

Thank you for the information. The email address you used for the purchase is all we need to know in order to get credit. Thank you that you care so much.

Let me know how you like the ring once it arrives.

I need your help again!!! I think I made a mistake and placed the order for the wrong diamond. It’s not a GIA is a AGS. But I thought it was the one that I found that you said is a beautiful one.
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.00-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-2430895?a_aid=dmnd1357

Could you please take a look and if is not a good one would you help me choose another one to exchange this one.
Also I wanted to tell you we bought this morning the wedding bands at Blue Nile with the same email address.
Hope you could give some words ASAP.

Sorry and thank you!

There’s no need to worry about purchasing this diamond. AGS certification is legitimate as well. We recommend purchasing stones with either AGS or GIA cert. This diamond is beautiful so I’d stick with it.

And thank you for the information about your purchasing the wedding bands, too.

I wish you good luck with all the preparations for wedding. And feel free to contact me again if there’s anything I can do for you.
