Q&A: Help Choosing an Oval Shaped Diamond With Around $2,500 Budget

By Mike Fried,

Hi, I have two pears I’m considering. They are the exact same price. Here are the GIA #s:
1235909707
2237482323

Both are .8 carats. The differences are, the first one is an E color and 1.50 l/w ratio. The second one is a G color and 1.56 l/w ratio. Both VS2, similar depth and table measurements. What are your thoughts on which one to go with?

Thanks!

Both are cut quite well, but I can’t decide which one to go with without seeing an actual photo and knowing the price. The photos are important because of the bow-tie effect. Can you provide me those? Or have you seen them in person?

Hi! I understand what you mean by the bow-tie effect. I haven’t seen them in person, I found them both on Pricescope. They were $2487 and $2486. Guess the bow-tie could be the deciding factor but without knowing how dramatic that is, is there any way you were leaning towards?

Thanks.

No. I don’t even know if they are eye-clean. They both have some inclusions and you need to see them as well. Without it, it’s practically impossible to choose one.

Oh. I meant if you had to pick on specs alone. Basically the decision is E and 1.50 l/w ratio or G and 1.56 ratio. Maybe I can get a video of the two to check for inclusions.

I bought an H color oval recently. It’s beautiful but the light brings in a slight yellowish tint. I’m wondering if I’m safe with a G pear. The 1.56 ratio seems slightly more appealing to me but the E color seems like a better value for it being the same price.

The specs are very similar on both diamonds. The L/W ratio is completely subjective. I might like something different than you do.

G and H don’t look very different. In fact, most people can’t really distinguish between these two. If you feel like an H is too warm for you, go with the E option.

Thanks!!

I found a video of the E pear. It’s actually listed on two sites… one is $143 more than the other. Seem eye clean?

same E without video for $2487

H without video for $2486

I’m not a big fan of the bowtie on the E diamond. It’s quite strong from certain angles.

What do you think of this diamond?

Thank you for checking the bow tie on that. This one at Blue Nile is nice. On Symmetry and Polish grades I was usually looking for at least Excellent on Polish. What is the difference between Excellent and Very Good? The table on this one is 64% which seems bigger than the tighter, 60% ones I was looking for.

What do you think about the table size?

Thanks.

There is not a big difference between an excellent and very good polish/symmetry.
